In 1933 Alan Blair, a medical faculty member at the University of Alabama, held a black widow against his skin for ten seconds to document the bite and test whether repeated bites could build immunity.

Picture this.

SPEAKER_2 (0:01)

It's 1933

Okay. You are a medical faculty member at the University of Alabama.

SPEAKER_1 (0:08)

Right.

SPEAKER_2 (0:08)

A guy named Alan Blair. And you have decided, just for the sake of science, to intentionally let a Black Widow Spider bite you.

SPEAKER_1 (0:17)

Oh, wow. Yeah.

SPEAKER_2 (0:18)

And you don't just brush it against your arm either. He literally held the spider against his skin and let it sink its fangs in for a full 10 seconds.

SPEAKER_1 (0:27)

That sounds like the start of a comic book origin story, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_2 (0:30)

It really does.

SPEAKER_1 (0:32)

But I'm guessing there was no radioactive superpower waiting for him at the end of this, just a profoundly brutal medical ordeal.

SPEAKER_2 (0:38)

Definitely not. I mean, Blair wanted to document the symptoms of the bite firsthand, like day by day, hour by hour.

SPEAKER_1 (0:45)

Right. A true scientific sacrifice.

SPEAKER_2 (0:47)

Exactly. His ultimate goal was to see if a human being could build up an immunity by being envenomated multiple times over a period of weeks.

SPEAKER_1 (0:57)

Oh, no. Multiple times.

SPEAKER_2 (0:59)

That was the plan. But here is the incredible true reality of that experiment.

The pain from that single initial bite was so agonizing, and the physical effects on his nervous system were so unimaginably harsh that Blair point blank refused to go through with the second bite.

SPEAKER_1 (1:16)

I do not blame him at all. Right.

SPEAKER_2 (1:20)

He just abandoned the experiment entirely. He just couldn't take it.

SPEAKER_1 (1:23)

Yeah, because the clinical descriptions of his symptoms are terrifying to read.

SPEAKER_2 (1:27)

They really are.

SPEAKER_1 (1:28)

His abdomen became rigid like a wooden board. He had these excruciating muscle spasms. His blood pressure just skyrocketed and he was violently ill.

SPEAKER_2 (1:39)

Just a complete nightmare.

SPEAKER_1 (1:40)

Truly. When you read the historical clinical data of what happens to the human body during one of these envenomations, it is a full system shock. You really cannot blame him for tapping out.

SPEAKER_2 (1:51)

Not for a second. And that story perfectly sets the stage for our mission on this deep dive for you today.

SPEAKER_1 (1:56)

It really does.

SPEAKER_2 (1:57)

Because we are pulling from a massive stack of sources for you today. We've got early 20th century taxonomic papers, modern clinical poison control reports, and cutting entorachnology field studies.

SPEAKER_1 (2:08)

A really wide range of data.

SPEAKER_2 (2:10)

Yeah. And it's all focusing on the Latrodactis genus. Globally, they are known and feared as the Widow Spiders.

SPEAKER_1 (2:18)

Very feared.

SPEAKER_2 (2:19)

Right. So our goal today is to strip away the pop culture terror. We want to separate the myths from the truly fascinating biological realities of these infamous arachnids.

SPEAKER_1 (2:29)

Because the truth is actually much stranger, and honestly in some ways much less scary than the fiction.

SPEAKER_2 (2:35)

Okay. Let's unpack this. We have to start with the bite itself because that's what humans fear most.

SPEAKER_1 (2:40)

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_2 (2:40)

But the reality of the danger doesn't quite match the reputation.

SPEAKER_1 (2:44)

No, it doesn't. To understand why they have that terrifying reputation in the first place, we have to look at what is actually happening at a microscopic level when the venom enters the bloodstream.

SPEAKER_2 (2:53)

Right. Because these are tiny spiders.

SPEAKER_1 (2:56)

Incredibly small. Yeah. But they possess unusually large venom glands for their size. And that venom contains a highly potent, highly complex neurotoxin called latrotoxin.

SPEAKER_2 (3:07)

Latrotoxin.

SPEAKER_1 (3:08)

Exactly. It's so specific to the spider and so impactful on human biology that the medical condition it causes is actually named after the genus. It's called latrodectism.

SPEAKER_2 (3:18)

Latrodectism.

SPEAKER_1 (3:19)

Wow.

SPEAKER_2 (3:21)

Our clinical sources describe the symptoms as this massive cascade of neurological misfires, including things like diaphoresis, which is heavy sweating, and tachycardia, you know, dangerously rapid heart rate.

SPEAKER_1 (3:33)

Yeah. It's intense.

SPEAKER_2 (3:34)

But how does the tiny drop of fluid cause all of that? Like, what is physically happening inside the body's nervous system?

SPEAKER_1 (3:42)

So think of your nerve endings like tiny dams holding back a reservoir of chemical messengers.

SPEAKER_2 (3:47)

Okay, dams. Got it.

SPEAKER_1 (3:49)

These messengers, specifically one called acetylcholine, are basically responsible for telling your muscles to contract.

SPEAKER_2 (3:55)

Right.

SPEAKER_1 (3:56)

Well, when latrotoxin enters the body, it essentially blows up the dam.

SPEAKER_2 (4:00)

Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_1 (4:01)

Yeah. It forces your nerve endings to just dump all of their acetylcholine at once in this massive, uncontrolled release.

SPEAKER_2 (4:07)

So it's just flooding the system.

SPEAKER_1 (4:09)

Exactly. Your synapses are completely flooded, so your muscles are receiving a constant screaming signal to clench.
