Hello, friends. A quick note to say that 60 Songs is now available on YouTube.

We made it.

Success. That was easy. You can now watch full episodes of this show on YouTube, and you can also check out our new social media accounts on Instagram and TikTok. All using the name 60 Songs That Explain the 90s. We have heard your cries of despair and confusion, and we have therefore embraced various popular online platforms. So watch us on YouTube, check us out on TikTok and Instagram. I'm on Blue Sky and Twitter still under the name Harvilla, H-A-R-V-I-L-L-A, but maybe stay out of it. I don't know. We'll put all the links for these in the episode description as well. Thanks for listening and or watching, and we'll see you on the Internet.

I'm pro football Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins, and I lived for a long time with something I did not know the name of, major depressive disorder. I carry sadness and anger because I thought I could handle it alone, but I couldn't. Now I want to make sure others know that that support is out there. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, talk to a healthcare professional. Visit mddallies.com to watch my story.

SPEAKER_3 (1:22)

Paid partnership with Johnson & Johnson. Brian Dawkins is not prescribed Caplyta lumateparone.

SPEAKER_4 (1:34)

I needed more from my antidepressant, so my doctor added Caplyta lumateparone, proven to provide greater relief from depression symptoms than an antidepressant alone, building on my progress without starting over. Caplyta is for adults with major depressive disorder when used with an antidepressant and is available by prescription only. Individual results may vary. In clinical trials, weight gain was not common.

SPEAKER_3 (1:54)

Elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. Caplyta is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. Call your doctor about new or sudden mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts right away. Antidepressants may increase these risks. Report fever, confusion, stiff muscles, which may be life-threatening, or uncontrolled muscle movements, which may be permanent. High cholesterol and weight gain may occur, as can high blood sugar, which may be fatal. Monitoring is recommended. Common side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, feeling tired, and diarrhea. These aren't all the side effects.

You get these random, perfect, absurdly idyllic moments when it all just clicks into place.

The perfect song at the perfect time, a sonic thunderbolt of total serenity.

It's even better when it's a totally mundane situation, when the right song turns a laughably ordinary activity into something extraordinary and unforgettable. So I'm driving my kids home, my two teenage sons and my five-year-old daughter. Early evening, we're tooting along in the minivan. We're passing a modest Ohio in, but lovely and peaceful looking body of water. We're bathed in the celestial light of a marvelous technicolor sunset. I got the stereo on and I am regaling my children with various beloved pop songs of my youth and young adulthood. But then one of my sons, he asks for a song and I put it on and boom, the minivan goes silent. The song commands our full attention. I get these instant goosebumps. I am overwhelmed by a sense of absolute contentment. The sunset glows with greater intensity and spiritual import. I can feel this song in this moment imprinting in my memory and in my kids' memories. It's awesome. As we silently enjoy this perfect song and this perfect moment together, what I'm mostly thinking is, are these lyrics dumb?

My Son Requests Piano Man, a beloved 1973 hit from one William Joel. Why does Billy Joel look so pale and frigid and perhaps even deceased on the cover of his 1973 album Piano Man? Why does he look like a marble statue of a member of My Chemical Romance? But more importantly, there's an old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic and gin. Is that dumb?

Are these bad lyrics? How does one make love to an alcoholic beverage? Don't answer that. And are you annoyed when Billy Joel sings tonic and gin, just so it rhymes with the regular crowd shuffles in? You know who got annoyed about that? You know who quite frankly got a little bitchy about the tonic and gin? Bernie Taupin. Long time superstar lyricist for one, Elton John. Bernie Taupin did an interview with Vulture in 2023 and he talked about how he hates it. When people in pop songs say, I'll die if you don't love me, because of course you won't literally die.
