Caution isn’t stopping Gordon Reid from finding opportunities. The President & Chief Investment Officer of Goodreid Investment Counsel Corp. is getting more defensive as markets contend with higher interest rates, inflation and geopolitical uncertainty—but he’s not taking his chips off the table.

Are you getting defensive in the portfolio?

Gordon Reid (0:06)

I would say yes, we're getting slightly more defensive.

Amber Kanwar (0:09)

We've got Gordon Reid on the podcast, The Billion Dollar Fund Manager is getting defensive, but still finding opportunities.

And where did you redeploy? Are you still waiting for opportunities?

Gordon Reid (0:18)

No, we bought a new position, we bought Verizon.

Amber Kanwar (0:21)

Are you pulling back on financials because of AI threat?

Gordon Reid (0:24)

We have pulled back on financials. I haven't mentioned health care yet.

Amber Kanwar (0:28)

Talk to me Gordon, I love talking about health care.

Gordon Reid (0:31)

It's working out quite well.

Amber Kanwar (0:32)

What a puzzle Netflix is.

Gordon Reid (0:33)

They're challenged. YouTube has twice the share that Netflix has. YouTube is taking more and more share.

Amber Kanwar (0:40)

CrowdStrike has moved through those and I'm pretty sure I'm looking at it at a record high. Do you like it?

Gordon Reid (0:46)

We own it.

Amber Kanwar (0:48)

Is that the same thing?

Hey, everybody. Welcome to a brand new episode of In the Money with Amber Kanwar. On this episode, we've got Gordon Reid. It was a classic stock picking episode. We go through a bunch of names. High level, Gordon does say he's getting defensive, but he remains invested because there are a lot of cross currents right now. The threat of higher interest rates stemming from higher oil prices. Whatever is going on with AI. Is CapEx up? Is it slowing? How do you reflect that in the portfolio? Interestingly, he brought us a lot of AI related names that have been beaten up in pro picks. So you won't want to miss that. And remember, all this month we are doing our swag giveaway wherever you are listening. All you have to do is show your subscriber, comment below, and every single episode we will pick a winner. And if you don't want to go through all that work, remember our swag store is now live. You can buy the merch yourself. We've got tons of these girls just want to have fun mugs. I've got the market cap hat in two different colors, hunter green and navy.

Both look fabulous. I don't know, Christmas is kind of around the corner, a couple months away. So they could make great stocking stuffers. But anyway, go to our website inthemoneypod.com and click on that shop button if you want to buy the merch yourself. Let's get into today's episode.

Gordon Reid, thank you so much for joining me on the podcast again.

Gordon Reid (3:36)

Thank you, Amber.

Amber Kanwar (3:37)

It's great to have you. We're almost at the end of September. And maybe, thank goodness, September has been a little bit messy for stocks. And there's been a couple of bogeymen.

The most prominent, I guess, and the newest has been interest rates. And the fact that rates are going higher, we're back into a rate hiking cycle globally. We didn't think that that was going to be the case as we walked into 2026 And oil prices are kind of pushing things, making things more expensive.

As an equity investor who focuses on American stocks, how are you thinking about the interest rate picture and whether it's time to take some chips off the table?

Gordon Reid (4:18)

Well, certainly we wouldn't take chips off the table. We've been through many, many cycles over the years.
