Personally for me, I wasn't expecting much from this summer league team. I mean, they didn't really draft anybody that really a lot of us wanted to see, but they did draft a few players, and one of the players they drafted, he's actually the bright spot that we're going to be talking about.
This kid, Tyler Nickel. Oh, man. I told you guys, when we drafted him, I called him a steal because he's a lethal shooter.
He is a lethal from three. And I mean, you don't have to watch a lot of him to understand why he's so good. You saw it during this game. That release, that release is extremely quick. He can get the ball out of his hands fast. And when he shoots that ball, nearly every time he puts it up, it looks like it's going in. Is that just me?
Because I thought that when he was putting the ball up, it looked like it was going in. He has a very good shot, very smooth, quick release. And I kind of like what I saw from him. Now obviously, I want to win the game. No matter what game we play, I want to win. But if they're not going to win the game, at least give me something to talk about other than a blowout. And thankfully, they were able to do that. And before you click away, just so you know, we will be talking about Pecone Dottier, who in my opinion, had a very impressive showing during Summer League. And it's important to talk about that for one reason.
Why is he playing in Summer League?
Probably because New York is looking to trade him, and the only way to showcase his ability is to play him in Summer League. But before we get to that, let's get to Tyler Nickel and show you guys exactly what he did. My guy, Tyler Nickel, got a little bit of praise from Josh Hart, who said 55, that's the number he's wearing right now, since Andre Drummond is taking number 0, got a chop. 55 got a chop. 6 threes for Tyler Nickel in his first Summer League game.
The bright spot according to Steve Popper was Tyler Nickel, who has a quick release, and every three that he shoots like looks like it's going in. He was 4 for 8 from 3 with about a minute and 45 left. Then he shot two more in the next minute, made those in, and he was 6 for 10 from 3
6 of 11 from the field. So I mean, you know, 18 points?
I don't think anybody's gonna hate on that. 18 points, all of them coming from deep? Yeah, I'll take that any day of the week. I liked what I saw from Tyler Nickel. I'm not saying it was an explosive type of performance, but when you're looking for something to get behind, I mean, he was somebody you could get behind. I love what I saw from him. I love the way that he moves without the ball. He goes to the corner. If you notice what he does during the game, while the ball handler is moving up the court, he'll follow him and he'll stop exactly where he gets trapped. So that way he can catch the ball and then shoot it in. That's a very impressive type of play for a player who's a rookie. He's already doing that. Matching the flow of the offense and matching the pace of the person who has the ball. And when he gets that ball, he immediately releases it. He does not want to hold it too long because he knows the defense is about to collapse on him. I'm not saying he had a lot of great moments on defense though. I think defensively he can still get better, but he's a rookie. I'm not going to go crazy on his defense right now. The shooting. The shooting is what I was looking at, and I was pretty impressed by the shooting. Again, for anybody who's just joining the stream right now, while the Knicks lost this game against Brooklyn for their first Summer League game, they did have a bright spot, and that bright spot was Tyler Nickel. Honestly, guys, I gotta say, this kid is a hidden gem. For me personally, he's a hidden gem that the Knicks just signed. I can't believe New York was able to steal him. The three ball is there. In my opinion, the way he's shooting the three, it'll translate instantly at the NBA level. And once you have one thing that can translate to the NBA level, you can build on that.
