Big Mac Faces Trial For Interrupting Brian Cashman

What's happening here at WFAN with my main man, Big Mac, under fire from all the other shows, all the other hosts, part-time guys, full-time guys, everybody taking shots at you, all because of yesterday's interview with Brian Cashman. And let me play the quote, the audio tape, Peter, you have the tape, I assume. We're gonna play the tape that's now resulted in you being criticized from the rooter to the tooter.

I was criticized twice for that interview. On two different occasions, I think we'll get to it. One is unfair, one is dramatically unfair.

**Craig Carton** (0:39)
Let me get to the, so we're talking to Brian Cashman. Brian Cashman is very, very good at giving long-winded answers.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:46)
He certainly is.

**Craig Carton** (0:47)
And it's a gift, actually, because he never takes a breath in the long-winded answer, and he winds up sometimes not answering a question. A lot of times he answers it, but in a bit of a roundabout way, it's a gift. Actually, it's a skill set. When you're going to be interviewed about things routinely, right? So when you're on the other side of it, in our position, asking the questions, there are times you don't want to hear the long-winded answer, so you might interrupt a guy mid-answered. It's a delicate trick in an interview. When's the appropriate time to jump in and stop a long-winded answer, especially when the guy typically does not really take a breath, okay?
You did it yesterday in a manner that everybody else at this radio station found objectionable. Other than me, I'll give you my take on it in a second. Pete's having trouble finding it, apparently, but you said to Brian Cashman, what exactly did you say?

I said, sorry to interrupt.

**Craig Carton** (1:48)
Sorry to interrupt, and then you interrupted him.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:52)
I think that's the problem. I interrupted first, and then I said, sorry to interrupt.

And then you allowed him to continue talking?

Yes, of course.

Yes.

And then eventually, when it was a space to get in, you then ultimately got in. Are we right about that?

I asked the question, he answered part of the question.
I knew the answer was going to go on forever, so I wanted to make sure I cleared up what he just said. So I interjected with, was that the plan all year? And then I followed that up immediately with a very soft spoken, sorry to interrupt.

And that seems to be problematic.

Here's the one thing I'll say.

I don't think that had anything to do with Brian Cashman being someone I support, being accused of being a children's store. I don't think that had anything to do with Yankee. That had to do with Brian Cashman and knowing that he goes long in interviews.
The previous question I wanted to interject, or I wanted to clarify something, but then the question went so long by the end of it, it felt pointless to interject.

Because he had moved on to something else? Because he had kind of said a bunch of different things. Or your brain went on to another topic, which happens.

So it was like, I'm not going to interject now. So in my mind, I'm saying to myself, all right, if he says something that I feel I need to interject with, just do it.
Say, hey, I'm sorry to do it.

**Craig Carton** (3:14)

**Chris McMonigle** (3:15)

Excuse me, Brian. Excuse me, but I have to just clarify something. But I forgot to clarify the-

You did in the reverse order is what you're saying.

I forgot to say, excuse me, I just want to ask. So at the end of it, I followed up with, sorry to interrupt.

So you basically interrupted, you interjected, and then apologize-

For interjecting. For interjecting. Exactly right.

And that's what you're getting killed for.

I'm getting all morning long, they're making fun of me for it.
