This week, Israel's Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu visited the White House for the fifth time in President Trump's current term, and the meeting was very strange, to say the least. From what we've heard, this meeting was very different than previous meetings between Trump and Bibi, and the reason why just might have to do with a massive shift coming in U.S.-Israel relations. A shift that will probably change the course of our relationship forever.
So this is Bibi's fifth visit to the White House since Trump took office for his second term. Normally for these visits, Bibi and his staff meet together in the Oval Office with Trump and his staff to discuss some broader topics. Then Bibi and Trump meet one-on-one behind closed doors to discuss the most sensitive issues. But this time, that one-on-one meeting did not happen. In a shift in protocol, all discussion happened in the Oval Office with Trump, JD Vance, Marco Rubio and others present. Some are interpreting this as yet another step in the deterioration of the relationship between Israel and the United States, as if Trump was wanting to send a signal to Israel that Bibi is no longer part of his inner circle of friends and confidants. But according to a leak from an Israeli official, this may have been more of a coordinated move.
Both Bibi and Trump realize the strong suspicion and hostile sentiment that has been festering recently among edges of both the right and left of the American public.
Very influential podcasters and commentators have been outright accusing Bibi of being Trump's handler, controlling his every move. Never mind the fact that the US population is about 30 times larger than Israel's. The US military budget is almost 20 times larger. And also Trump regularly does things that aren't in Israel's best interest and tells Bibi to stuff it if he complains. But the accusations remain and day by day they are growing louder. So because of this, according to this Israeli official, this White House trip was carefully coordinated. Yes, there were important issues to discuss, but it had to be done in a way where the American public could be satisfied that this meeting was like any other meeting between the US and the head of a fellow allied nation. And it also had to be done in a way where voices in Trump's own administration, who are themselves distrustful of Israel, could have full voice in the conversation.
And then there was the way Bibi handled himself in the meeting itself. Back in February, Bibi walked into the White House like a staff member who got a once a year chance to pitch a project to a company executive. He brought a detailed plan, slideshow cues, testimonials from security officials, and a detailed intelligence. But this trip, Bibi brought almost none of this. Instead, this meeting was a more relaxed back and forth discussion. Bibi reportedly laid out three paths for the Iran War. One would be diplomacy, the other is continued war, the third is blockade. According to a direct quote from someone in the meeting, quote, Netanyahu did not tell Trump which of the three scenarios he preferred, although the premier did acknowledge doubts regarding the possibility that Iran will uphold any agreement it signs. And apparently, this is the main reason Trump called the meeting. All three options Bibi presented are on the table currently, and Trump is undecided as to what to do. Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are still negotiating with Iran, and according to a Pakistani source, those negotiations are continuing despite the current fighting that is happening right now. But as we've seen in the media, those negotiations seem to be going nowhere, and while a diplomatic solution would be optimal for everyone involved, it is becoming more and more clear that the Iranians simply cannot be trusted to keep their word on anything they agree to in any of these negotiations. But that being said, Trump is currently at an impasse. US public support for the war isn't very strong at the moment, especially as this drags out longer, and Trump is concerned for the state of the global economy, especially in Europe. Iran is using the only leverage they have against the US, the Strait of Hormuz, to their full advantage, and every day that goes by, the pressure on the markets worsens. But according to assessments, Iran is also massively feeling the pressure. Every day, they are facing increasingly worse fuel supply problems, longer lines at gas stations, etc. And despite the dangers, protests have begun breaking out again as well. And there's real fear in the regime that there will be a broad uprising, one that will break the reign of the Ayatollahs. And according to reports, there are a good number of IRGC members who are abandoning their post as well and disappearing. According to one IRGC member who deserted, many of those who are choosing to stay are only doing so because of the money they are receiving from the government. And to quote him directly, quote, if it were not for the money, they would have turned their weapons toward the IRGC a long time ago.
