Best of the Mets on WFAN: Pete Alonso returns
The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle
September 19, 2026
Pete Alonso returned to Queens this week, and it brought about PLENTY of debates. Gio says Alonso hitting his 300th career home run to tie the game in the ninth for the Orioles, and getting a curtain call as a visiting player afterward, cemented 2026 as the most embarrassing season in Mets history.

I thought Mets fans last night were on the money. I thought Mets fans did exactly what they deserve to do, which is express their dissatisfaction with Stearns, and obviously, he chanted his name frequently last night, and letting him know in no uncertain terms how they feel about him, and also applauding and cheering for one of their favorite players of all time.
I thought they did a good job.
Chris McMonigle (0:22)
I've seen a lot of people complain about several different things that the Mets fan did last night, and being called outrageous and unacceptable. I have zero problem with anything that was done last night. In fact, let me take that back. I don't love booing your young pitcher when he walks him. That's a little bit much for me.
Like, it wasn't like you...
Evan Roberts (0:44)
They were there to support Pete.
Chris McMonigle (0:45)
I understand that. It wasn't a four-pitch walk. He was battling with Pete Alonso, trying to win the game, and he walked him. I felt booing that moment was a tad bit much. Outside of that, anyone...
Evan Roberts (0:57)
Can you stop there for a second?
Craig Carton (0:58)
I don't think they were booing...
Chris McMonigle (0:59)
No, they were booing...
Craig Carton (1:00)
The pitcher.
Chris McMonigle (1:00)
Yeah, Jonah Tong.
Evan Roberts (1:02)
Yeah, they were booing the Mets.
Craig Carton (1:05)
They wanted Pete Alonso to get a chance to hit a home run. They were there more last night, as Mets fans, to celebrate Pete Alonso, one of their favorite Mets. I didn't think that I would say, Jonah Tong, you suck.
Chris McMonigle (1:18)
No, it wasn't that. But still, it seemed a bit much to go over that line. To me, it just seemed like he's trying to pitch out that you're going to boo him for not grooving a meatball to Pete Alonso. He has to throw a fastball down the middle, otherwise you're not happy.
Craig Carton (1:32)
Would have made him happy.
Chris McMonigle (1:33)
Exactly, that's a tad bit over the line for me. But again, for the most part, the idea that they cheered at every opportunity, that's why they went there. I have no problem with that. I have no problem with them getting up and leaving once Pete Alonso was done.
SPEAKER_4 (1:47)
Which a lot of people think.
Chris McMonigle (1:49)
They voiced, we talked about it going in, that was going to be a night not only to celebrate Pete, but an opportunity to the fan base to let David Stearns know and to let this ownership group know that they are unhappy with not only letting Pete go, but what they replaced them with and what this team became this year, which was eliminated from the postseason last night. So if they want to get up and leave, the second that Pete Alonso was done with that game, they had every right to do that.
Craig Carton (2:19)
I think you could have predicted it. That's what I would have did. I'm not here to watch the Mets tonight.
I'm a die hard season ticket holding Mets fan. I'm here to watch Pete because he was my favorite Mets. He was one of the best Mets, whatever the case may be. Yuri Mets fan, you want to chime in on that there, Biggs?
SPEAKER_5 (2:37)
Yeah.
Everyone complaining about booing Jonatong walking Pete Alonso. But if Pete Alonso hit a whole run off of Jonatong, we'd be cheering. Isn't that just as insulting to Jonatong?
Craig Carton (2:47)
Of course it is.
SPEAKER_5 (2:48)
So what the hell is the difference?
Evan Roberts (2:49)
But it wasn't about Jonatong.
Chris McMonigle (2:50)
Well, that's the point.
Craig Carton (2:51)
Jonatong's name could have been Bob Smith last night.
Evan Roberts (2:54)
It didn't matter.
Chris McMonigle (2:55)
That would have been applauding Pete. This was frustration that you didn't give Pete the opportunity to do something. Like Jonatong is supposed to groove him fastballs.
I do have a distinct difference there. If he hits the home run and you're celebrating it, that's just the celebration of Pete and would be taken as such. To me, booing walking him is like, hey, don't you understand the game plan, kid? Tonight's give him fastballs and hope he hits a home run.
Craig Carton (3:17)
It's hey, Jonah, why am I sitting in my seat tonight? It's not to watch you strike out Pete Alonso or walk him. It's about, I want to see Pete Alonso swing the bat.
Chris McMonigle (3:28)
You challenge him, why are we walking him? I want to see him hit a home run, challenge him. You've ruined an opportunity we had to see Pete come through in a big moment. Once the moment happens, applauding him is different for me. That's all I'm saying.
