The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

September 29, 2026

An ugly victory couldn't mask the panic in Big Blue's front office following a season-ending ACL injury to star pass-rusher Brian Burns and a desperation trade for J.J. McCarthy.

This is the WFAN Fan Focus. No baseball tonight. We await NHL opening night tomorrow, but we do get another football game, and it has local interest. The Eagles face Case Keenum under center with the Bears. Jets, of course, play the Bears next week. And an Eagle loss will give the Giants a share of first place in the NFC.

Evan Roberts (0:16)

Just want to give you an update on something that's important to give an update on, just because Sean brought it up so passionately back in late August. Through three games, Malik Nebers, 12 catches, 96 yards, no touchdowns. Garrett Wilson, 21 catches, 243 yards, two touchdowns.

Sean Morash (0:31)

Great. Garrett's off to a great start.

Tiki Barrera (0:32)

He's off to an unbelievable start.

Sean Morash (0:34)

Malik Nebers is ahead of schedule back from an ACL injury.

Evan Roberts (0:37)

So the goalposts. If you heard it, if you're listening to a sound right now, it's the goalposts being moved by Sean.

Sean Morash (0:44)

It's not a goalpost. When we had an argument, it wasn't who's going to be the better receiver in 2026

Evan Roberts (0:47)

Sean, I'm just giving you the numbers, okay? Garrett Wilson, well ahead of Malik Nebers. The other update I want to give, and I'm going to continue to do this because it's fun.

Drake May, since the start of the postseason, seven starts, he has a passer rating of about 59 He has thrown seven touchdown passes to 10 interceptions. He has thrown an interception in all seven games, except for the AFC Championship game, when they asked him to just stand there and do nothing. Drake May continues to be an incredible liability and major props to our coworker, Boomer Esiason, who said the quiet part out loud earlier this morning on Boomer & Gio. He asked, when does Mike Vrabel bench Drake May for Tommy DeVito?

Sean Morash (1:33)

I think DeVito might be the answer.

Evan Roberts (1:34)

It's a great question. It's a very fair question to ask, considering how awful Drake May has been, since not just the start of the season, but even going back to the postseason last year. So, I don't know about you guys, maybe another week or two, maybe it's against the Jets in a few weeks. I don't know, but Drake May is becoming an unplayable disaster at quarterback for the Patriots.

Not my problem.

Tiki Barrera (1:59)

I'm just saying.

Evan Roberts (2:00)

Just pointing it out. If you're ranking the quarterbacks in the AFC East, Josh Allen, number one, Geno Smith, number two.

Sean Morash (2:06)

Jake Hayner has been waived, by the way.

Craig Carton (2:08)

Oh, boy, poor Jake.

Tiki Barrera (2:09)

Yeah, that was obvious.

Evan Roberts (2:11)

Poor guy. Let's go to Pete N'Kope. Okay, Pete.

SPEAKER_3 (2:16)

What's going on, fellas?

Evan Roberts (2:17)

What's up?

SPEAKER_3 (2:19)

So obviously I'm in a fantasy football league. I'm a male in my mid 30s. Of course.

And we have a very heavy debate all the way going from last year. And we have a Vikings fan, a real true Vikings fan in our league. And a Giants fan who has given him guff about JJ. McCarthy every day for 365 days. And then today, JJ. McCarthy becomes a New York giant and he cannot live with it. He cannot breathe. He's obscene. I don't know. I don't know. Wow. I don't know what to do. Should I, I might have to call a hotline. He might not make it through the day. I think I got to make him a JJ. McCarthy science jersey now before it's too late and make him wear it when he loses fantasy this year.

It's mind-boggling. Have you understood the amount of guff that he has given this Vikings fan over JJ. McCarthy? Like, he drafted him.

Evan Roberts (3:24)

This is the dangers of being a sports fan, that you will have strong opinions about certain athletes that you never think would end up on your team. And then when they're there, it's like posted and toasted. The fun segment we do on Tuesdays, we throw it in your face. And you almost have to be open and prepared that anything in sports can happen. So if you were a giant fan crapping on JJ. McCarthy, which Sean did for a while, this day always was a possibility. It was always a possibility. And you know what you do?

It's so true. It's something Craig once told me about being a sports fan. And I mean, he don't know much about sports, but he knew this. And he's right. Sometimes you just got to wrap your legs around the host and say, wait, hold on. I'm screwing up what he said. I think it was an airplane analogy. You got to, you know, you may not like your pilot, but you hope your pilot lands the plane well. So I think when a player is acquired that you don't like, you take your opinions and you hope you're wrong.
