Good evening, friends of the Inner Sanctum.

Wyatt Cox (1:24)

We head back 80 years to September 27, 1942, an episode of The Whistler from its first season, entitled Jealousy. Thank you for tuning in. On this Tuesday edition, this is the 27th day of September, 270th day of the year, 95 days remaining.

The wreck of the old 97, a train crash made famous by the song of the same name, took place on this date in 1903 Glenn Miller and his orchestra performed for the last time on this date in 1942 before Miller entered the Army. The nationwide debut of Tonight, which would later become The Tonight Show, hosted by Steve Allen and a fellow from the match game, Gene Rayburn, on this date in 1954

SPEAKER_9 (2:15)

In case you're just joining us, this is Tonight. And I can't think of too much to tell you about it, except I want to give you the bad news first. This program is going to go on forever.

Why, you think you're tired now?

You wait till you see 1 o'clock roll around. It's a long show. It goes on from 11.3 here in the east, that is, from 11.3 to 1 in the morning. And we especially selected this particular theater. This is a New York theater called The Hudson. And we especially selected this for this very late show because this theater's, oh, I think it sleeps about 800 people.

Wyatt Cox (2:57)

The show actually began at 11.15 with a segment just for New York City, but then it ran for 90 minutes.

So, you know, now we're 45 minutes. Really, the guys were working that long. 1954, that same date, Senator Joseph McCarthy responded to a report from a Senate committee that found him in an unfavorable light for his anti-communist campaign, mostly though, for his methods.

SPEAKER_10 (3:24)

I am not setting myself above any law, but Senator, I just will not abide by any secrecy directive of anyone. I think you and I have and will see presidents come and go. We have a duty to do our job even though we may differ with a perfectly honest version of what the president thinks his job is.

Wyatt Cox (3:49)

The report called McCarthy's behavior as a committee chairman inexcusable, reprehensible and vulgar and insulting. The Senate voted to censure him December 2nd, 1954 McCarthy died in May of 1957 of acute hepatitis at the age of just 48

1964, the Warren Commission released its report concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In Afghanistan in 1996, the Taliban captured the capital city, Kabul, after driving out the president and executing former leader Mohammed Najibullah. Google established on this date in 1998 And in 2012, a mass shooting took place at Accent Sighting Systems in Minneapolis. Six people killed, including the gunman who committed suicide. Passing away on this date in history, Lloyd Nolan, fine actor, actor, singer-dancer Donald O'Connor, the founder of Playboy Enterprises, Hugh Heppner, and American singer and the co-founder of the band Jefferson Airplane, Marty Ballin.

This is the birthdate of revolutionary leader Samuel Adams, also Thomas Nast, and magician Harry Blackstone Sr., also Jane Meadows, born on this date in history, along with 15 years, by the way, she died in 2015, 15 years after the death of her husband, Steve Allen. Also born on this date, William Conrad, fine radio star, and his television work was good as well, but he had gained so much weight by that point in time, that a lot of it was kind of satirical, sadly.
