An episode of the Four Star Playhouse coming up, as it was originally broadcast 73 years ago, September 11, 1949 at 8 o'clock at night, the lead-off slot. Paradise USA starring one of those four stars, Rosalind Russell along with another gentleman by the name of Ira Grossel. Now you may not know who that is, but you'll know in a bit. We thank you for joining us on this Sunday. This is the 11th day of September, 254th day of the year, 111 days remaining to 2023

Was on this date in 2001 to hijack commercial jets crashed by terrorists into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing the collapse of both towers. A short while later, another plane crashed into the Pentagon, a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In total, almost 3,000 were killed.

SPEAKER_8 (2:32)

All the news, all the time. Terrorism at the World Trade Center.

SPEAKER_9 (2:36)

This is beyond belief.

SPEAKER_3 (2:38)

Breaking news.

SPEAKER_10 (2:39)

Two planes have smashed into the towers minutes apart.

SPEAKER_8 (2:43)

We were stunned.

SPEAKER_7 (2:44)

We were shocked.

SPEAKER_11 (2:45)

The Z100-852.

SPEAKER_8 (2:47)

Something weird is going on.

SPEAKER_11 (2:49)

The World Trade Center is on fire.

SPEAKER_8 (2:51)

Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_7 (2:52)

Seriously, the top of the building.

SPEAKER_8 (2:53)

We're trying to get information, Elvis. It looks like floors are just gone.

SPEAKER_11 (2:57)

It looks like, how do you turn it on? Clearly, we're in the middle of the worst ever act of terrorism directed at the United States on domestic soil, and it may not be over.

SPEAKER_9 (3:07)

It's 9 o'clock now at WOR New York, along with Joe Bartholomew of the WOR News Center. I'm Ed Walsh. This is one of those days that all of us will remember for the rest of our lives.

SPEAKER_6 (3:17)

This is 1010 wins.

SPEAKER_12 (3:19)

You give us 22 minutes, we'll give you the world.

SPEAKER_13 (3:22)

As hard as they tried to distance themselves from the news and not be the news, their emotions were really on their sleeves, and that's good radio. It's just, it's natural.

SPEAKER_14 (3:36)

I'm getting goosebumps as I talk about it, and watch the second plane hit, as most of the country did.

SPEAKER_9 (3:41)

Oh my God, Ed, another plane just hit the World Trade Center. Another plane, it was a medium-sized plane, unbelievable. It was a, it would look like, oh my God, this is, this is a deliberate act, Ed. This plane flew directly into the second World Trade Center.

SPEAKER_10 (3:58)

God, the next building is just under water. Oh my God, oh my God.

SPEAKER_11 (4:04)

Another plane just flew in.

SPEAKER_10 (4:06)

The heat, the explosion is incredible.

SPEAKER_3 (4:09)

Oh my God, oh my God, I can't believe it.

SPEAKER_15 (4:13)

All right, we've got Neil Augenstein, who we've been trying to bring up this morning.

SPEAKER_11 (4:17)

Neil, are you, can you tell us what you see at the Pentagon now?

SPEAKER_10 (4:21)

Mike, can you hear me? Yes, I can.

SPEAKER_11 (4:22)

Neil Augenstein, you're live on the air. Tell us what you see at the Pentagon.

SPEAKER_10 (4:25)

Okay, I'm standing right on, what is it, 395, right by the boundary channel drive exit, looking across to the Pentagon, seeing heavy, heavy smoke. Oh, my God, the building fell.

Are you there? The building just fell.
