Hi there, welcome to Mindset Movie Reviews, time to review the movie, Help.
Help is a delightful romp through the whimsical world of The Beatles, directed by Richard Lester. Released in 1965, this adventure musical and comedy film captures the essence of the swinging sixties with its playful narrative and infectious energy. The plot revolves around Ringo Starr, the drummer of The Beatles, who finds himself in a peculiar predicament when a sacred sacrificial ring from the eastern cult of Kylie gets stuck on his finger. The cult, led by the determined High Priest Clang, played by Leo McKern, is desperate to retrieve the ring to continue their rituals, setting off a series of comedic chases across the globe.
The film's narrative is a blend of absurdity and charm with The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr embarking on a madcap adventure to save Ringo from becoming the cult's next sacrifice. Along the way, they encounter a host of eccentric characters, including a pair of bumbling scientists and the Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard, all while delivering some of their most memorable songs. Help is not just about the plot. It's a celebration of the Beatles' music and their unique brand of humour. The film is peppered with slapstick comedy and witty one-liners, showcasing the band's ability to entertain beyond their musical talents. The humour is often nonsensical, reminiscent of the Marx Brothers or a Jerry Lewis farce, yet it remains endearing and entertaining. Visually, the film is a feast for the eyes, thanks to the vibrant cinematography by David Watkin. The use of Eastman colour enhances the film's playful tone, making it a visual delight. The sequences shot in exotic locations like the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas add to the film's adventurous spirit, providing a picturesque backdrop to the band's antics.
While Help may not reach the cinematic heights of its predecessor, A Hard Day's Night, it offers its own brand of manic pleasure. The film's narrative may be more structured, but it retains the anarchic spirit that made the Beatles' first film a success. The supporting characters, including the villainous Clang and the seductive high priestess. Am, played by Eleanor Braun, add depth to the story though at times they overshadow the band itself. Despite its flaws, Help remains a fun and entertaining film, buoyed by the Beatles' innate charm and their timeless music. Songs like You're Going to Lose That Girl, Ticket to Ride and the titular Help are highlights showcasing the band's musical prowess and adding to the film's overall appeal.
For fans of the Beatles, Help is a must watch. Offering a glimpse into the band's playful side and their ability to captivate audiences with both their music and their comedic talents. Even for those who may not be diehard fans, the film's quirky humour and vibrant visuals make it an enjoyable experience. In the end, Help is a testament to the Beatles' enduring legacy and their ability to bring joy to audiences, one song and one laugh at a time. That's my take on Help, and I'm giving it three stars out of a possible five. Thanks for listening.
