This is Reasonable Doubt with your hosts, Mark Geragos and Gary Smith.

Mark Geragos (0:40)

Well, I know GPS gets mad when I say this, but it's an upgrade when I've got Lauren as my co-host. And Lauren, we really had some fun last week and apparently others were as enthralled as you and I were, but we may have more fun this week because last week we talked about the Clancy case and we're on murder. This might, we may have to say Beyond A Reasonable Doubt, murder episode number 52, but boy, is there a murder trial going on right now that is wild. You wanna kind of summarize?

Lauren Conlin (1:18)

Yeah, this is a wild one and thank you so much for the introduction. I just started paying attention to this. This is a Caleb Flynn trial. He's a former American Idol contestant, 2013 He didn't get very far. He's a worship leader or a self-proclaimed man of God, and he is on trial for the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn. She was 37 years old. He's 40 years old. And before we get to some of the cringey things that have happened in the courtroom this past week, I wanna tell you why I do find this case rather interesting.

And this is coming from someone who wasn't really paying attention to a lot of the coverage, and I just kind of honed in on it.

I mean, circumstantially, it all makes sense, but evidence-wise, there's no murder weapon, and the DNA that's been found in the house, I mean, yes, it belongs to Caleb, but he lives there. Now, one other aspect is that there's no outside DNA that's been found, which is interesting. If you're telling me and you're telling the 911 operator that you think there's a burglary, someone came in, an intruder came in and shot your wife, most likely, most likely, aren't they going to find some kind of external DNA there? Maybe?

Mark Geragos (2:36)

Well, you mentioned cringey, and the reason do you have, there's a clip, and I'm going to go out on a limb, and I'm going to say that the reason this thing started resonating is because of this particular clip.

Lauren Conlin (2:52)

Okay, and so just to kick it off, Caleb Flynn, one of the reasons he was targeted is because he was cheating on his wife, and he was cheating with a girl from the church, and he wrote her a love song, and it was played in open court.

Mark Geragos (3:10)

By the way, before you play this, this is like if you're the guy who's being accused, you'd almost, I've seen this, so I'm just going to preface it.

I think I would want to vaporize myself if this were me. I think I would rather be convicted than have this played in open court televised.

Lauren Conlin (3:30)

You know what? I have another clip flag that I actually want to play first with Peter Tragos as well, who is a lawyer. The lawyer you know. What he says, Mark, I think you're really going to appreciate here because it's, I just think you're going to appreciate it. So let's get this played, and we'll play a little more of the song.

All right.

Peter Tragos (4:00)

I saw people breaking down some of the lyrics, making fun of this as the most basic song ever. I thought it was weird that he had to use an AI voice generated thing when he's a good singer like an American Idol guy.

SPEAKER_4 (4:10)

I'm a terrible singer, so maybe I would use an AI generator.

Peter Tragos (4:13)

I've never written a song for anybody before, but maybe I should try with an AI generator. I mean, this has got to be top five most embarrassing things I've ever seen in court. Like the proctor reading text has to be up there. Maybe the mistress reading text would be up there too, but this is brutal. I cannot explain to you how it must be able to sit next to him as a lawyer even. I mean, just brutal.
