G'day, listeners. Welcome to Bar Karate, The Sailing Podcast. My name is Jordan Spencer. It's that time of the week where I get to hang out with some really cool sailors. But of course, I have to share the mic with a couple of my idiot mates. So first off, let's welcome Mr. Brett Perry.
Stacey Jackson (0:44)
Greetings, Exalted One.
Bret Perry (0:47)
How are you going, guys?
Well, I've been up in Newcastle the last couple of days. I've got to say, I'll tell you why, because I've got some friends from America who have come down. They've sailed all the way from Portland, Oregon, and in Newcastle, getting ready for the Hobart. So on this 142, so I've been up there helping them out. And I've got to say, Newcastle has been a wonderful place for them. And obviously up there with Mid Coast Marine doing all the work, it's been great. And they're looking forward to it. They are looking forward to it. I've got to say.
Jordan Spencer (1:20)
Well, with my forecast, I think my forecast allows it.
Bret Perry (1:23)
The forecast suits it. It suits it. It's ready to go. Yeah. I've even bought new sails for them.
Jordan Spencer (1:29)
Very cool. Let's bring in the other host. Let's bring in the standard.
Peter Winter (1:35)
You guys know how it's hard to be friends with me because I'm so awesome.
Jordan Spencer (1:39)
Stacey Jackson.
Stacey Jackson (1:42)
I still don't have something cool to say after that. I still put off every time.
Bret Perry (1:46)
That's okay. The laughter is funnier.
Stacey Jackson (1:49)
Hey, so are you friends with the Swung 42? Did we meet them in the PAC Cup in Hawaii?
Annie Stevenson (1:54)
Yeah, we did. We did.
Bret Perry (1:55)
Well, I don't know if you did, but they were there. And the funniest part was they come up and said, so are you from Sydney? And I went, I think so.
And then they said, well, we're coming down. And I said, look, if you need a hand, you know, I'll help you out. And it's what's good about it, Stacey, and you know, when you go around the world and you're doing things, even just as flying in this crew, knowing where to go is hard. But when you take a boat there, it's even harder. So they're loving it. So it's good.
Stacey Jackson (2:22)
That's awesome. It's nice having friends all over the world when it comes to getting boats ready for yacht races.
Bret Perry (2:28)
Yeah, just a little race.
Jordan Spencer (2:30)
Just a little race.
Bret Perry (2:31)
I've got to say, in order, pack up, delivery to Namir, delivery to Fiji, delivery to Newcastle.
Sydney to Hobart, yacht race. Delivery back to Brisbane at the end of that. It's not a bad program.
Stacey Jackson (2:43)
Yeah, wow.
Jordan Spencer (2:43)
Though ahead in South, I thought Antarctica was coming up after Hobart.
Bret Perry (2:48)
No, they're going to finish it in God's country. I talked them out of that.
Jordan Spencer (2:51)
Yeah, come back to Queensland where everything's good and peaceful. I was having this conversation the other day.
I was talking about somebody was trying to talk about racing, and too much uphill stuff in where they're racing. I said, well, if you just come and sail in Queensland, you never go upwind. I remember having one race where we went upwind for about a nautical mile, and I was bitching because it's Queensland. We just sail downwind up here.
Bret Perry (3:15)
Everywhere you go is downwind. Except for last year in the Brisbane Glaston. Except for last year in the Brisbane Glaston.
Jordan Spencer (3:19)
That was the last year, the year before.
Bret Perry (3:21)
I don't know. You promised us it was downwind the whole time. Lucky I didn't go that year. Yeah. Anyway.
Jordan Spencer (3:27)
Speaking of great races, there's been a lot of passion in the old Bar Karate team for double-handed racing.
There are camps forming, and the Bar Karate team is in the double-handed camp. We said it's nothing but good for the sport. And the recent worlds, which we were talking about not too long ago, was concluded in very light winds, but they went through a whole qualifying procedure, and then they had a race, and the defending champions won. But in second place, much more importantly, in second place, because they hadn't got the reverse curse at this stage, they, we had a couple of Australians, which is, well, I don't know, can we call Annie in Australia? We're gonna have to, person living in Australia. But anyway, so we got a team representing Australia who took out Silver, and we're very excited to have a chat to them. We've been wanting to have this chat almost immediately after the event. So we've been able to pull it together with all the mixed schedules. Of course, Nick Bice is not here because where's he gone? He's doing dance recital or something, isn't he?
