G'day, listeners. Welcome to Bar Karate, The Sailing Podcast. My name is Jordan Spencer. It's that time of the week where we get to hang out with some really cool sailors. But of course, I have to share the mic with my idiot mates. So first off, let's welcome Mr. Brett Perry.
Peter Gibbons-Neff (0:44)
Greetings, Exalted One.
Jordan Spencer (0:46)
Hey, Pete.
Bret Perry (0:47)
Good morning, good afternoon, wherever you may be on this lovely planet.
I love seeing a dream come to reality. And having done that a few times, I feel like it's a good episode to talk about what we're talking about. Because you start off with an idea. And I've done a lot of ideas and turned a few of them into actual real things. And what we got is not only an idea, but the pain that you go through to get to that end point. And when you see it come to life, it's a real gratifying feeling, but it's also a new chapter in things. So we've got a good one today.
Jordan Spencer (1:28)
We do. Absolutely. One of them makes you been looking forward to a lot.
The only problem is other hosts are gone. They're one's...
Peter Gibbons-Neff (1:39)
Gone!
Jordan Spencer (1:39)
They're both... One's doing match racing world champs and one's doing St. Tropez, I'm thinking. I'm assuming.
Peter Gibbons-Neff (1:46)
I actually didn't ask him.
Jordan Spencer (1:48)
I didn't ask him. He's...
I haven't spoken to him this week, so maybe he's been abducted. Never thought about that.
Bret Perry (1:54)
Oh, well, we could only hope.
Jordan Spencer (1:57)
The croc army.
Bret Perry (1:58)
Then there's a real reason for not showing up.
Jordan Spencer (2:00)
You know what it is. His defender's broken down. And he's too embarrassed to tell us. He's broken down somewhere in the December.
And the oil.
Bret Perry (2:09)
Anyway, on with the show, as they say in the classics.
Jordan Spencer (2:12)
All right, well, let's get on to it. We're going to have a bit of a chat. We had this guest on the show. We just worked it out three years ago.
And we were really interested. Obviously BP's got the massive interest in the Mini 650s, and the 23 Mini Transat was coming up. And so we did a bit of a focus on that. And it was really interesting. And now our guest is coming back, and this time going the full Proto route. And it's just launched a new boat, and it's bloody awesome. And we've been watching the photos and waiting. And we thought, well, you know what? We've got to go and find out a bit more about all this. It looks like a big black coffin is going to go sailing across the ocean. So we want to welcome back to Bar Karate, Peter Gibbons-Neff.
Bret Perry (2:56)
Only on the inside, only on the inside.
Jordan Spencer (2:59)
Peter, welcome back to Bar Karate, buddy.
Peter Gibbons-Neff (3:01)
Hey, guys, thanks for having me. Appreciate it.
Jordan Spencer (3:04)
Well, it's good to have you. Obviously, you're a man determined little bugger. You've, as we said, we saw you three years ago. You were doing the thing for Patriot Sailing. I think you're an ambassador now for Patriot Sailing. You did your little 650
You had, I mean, what, you lose a rudder or something. I remember we were all gutted for you. Is that right?
Peter Gibbons-Neff (3:24)
We can get into that. Yeah, one of the rudders ripped completely off the boat on the second leg. Absolutely. That's right.
Bret Perry (3:28)
It sounds familiar.
Peter Gibbons-Neff (3:30)
Yeah.
Bret Perry (3:31)
It sounds bloody familiar. So, yes. And of course, on an RG 650, which is dear to my heart. So it was a good follow to watch it all happen other than the incident, but it's a pathway story. And that's what we're about here at Bar Karate. We like to see these things happen. And that's, I guess, what this chat's about, Joe.
Jordan Spencer (3:52)
Yeah. Well, I'm interested, mate. You know, you did your Transat in your 650 You had a little bit of issue. You got through, you got done.
Did you think that was a lot of fun? Is that what happened or?
Peter Gibbons-Neff (4:03)
I mean, fun is one way to say that.
So yeah, no, fun is one way to look at it. But no, I mean, it was an experience. It was, it was enjoyable, but it was definitely not how I envisioned it. You know, three years of preparation and just completely putting all the focus into a campaign like that. You know, I went into it with an older boat, you know. I was out there for the experience for the racing. I love offshore racing. You know, this was my first time across the Atlantic Ocean, but you know, I wasn't, I wasn't expecting the rudder to completely rip off the boat, you know, on the second leg after leaving the Canaries.
