G'day listeners, welcome to Bar Karate The Sailing Podcast. My name's Jordan Spencer. It's that time of the week where we get to hang out with some really cool sailors. But of course, I have to share the mic with my two idiot mates. So first off, let's welcome Mr. Brett Perry.

I gotta say, today, as of time of recording, it's Saturday afternoon here in Sydney, and what a beautiful day it is. It's days like today, you look out at the harbor and you go, why do I travel? Why do I travel?

Oh yeah, I hear you, I hear you. Getting on planes.

**Bret Perry** (1:02)
Obviously we do and we've got to, but my god, it was beautiful looking out there today.

**Jordan Spencer** (1:06)
Yeah, Sydney can look incredibly beautiful. Let's bring in the other bloke. Yes, people, we have got him.

Getting a bit sentimental there, BP. Absolutely, mate. Sydney. Speaking of travel, I found the ultimate travel hack.
I'm now in Sardinia and flew into Rome. I'm here for the Sydney Sardinia Cup, flew into Rome, massive views for immigration, all that sort of stuff.

But what you do is you leave your passport on the plane. You get to the passport machine, and you're like, where the fuck is my passport?
You get directed to the police station before that you actually go through the immigration bits. The guy from the plane delivers your passport as well as the drink bottle that you left. And then you skip the queue.

That's never happened before. But Jesus. Yes, slightly stressful.
But yeah. So then yeah, now in Sardinia and went down and saw the boats. Yesterday, they just arrived from the long race.

Which turned into a bit of an overnighting and plenty of breeze, but we'll chat about a bit more about that in hot time. But just for the listeners, stick around because there's plenty of stories.

Exciting. Looking forward to everything about this episode. Our guest today is someone that has been around the world of sailing a lot and I suspect has contributed immensely to bringing a lot of people into our sport. I hear her name quite a bit. She's a three-time Olympian, but also involved at a board level with Australian Sailing in the past as Vice Commodore of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Does so much, but is someone that we want to talk about because is part of one of the teams competing in the International Women's Championship coming up in September in New York Yacht Club.

I genuinely is, Karyn, actually. It genuinely is, because I do hear your voice, your name a lot, and you seem to be someone that has an immense passion for our sport. And I just wonder where that comes from.

**Karyn Gojnich** (4:12)
I suppose it's come from the opportunities that I've had along the way. I was really fortunate that my parents decided to move to a waterfront property on the Lane Cove River before waterfronts got trendy.
And affordable. And what all the locals did was literally just go down to the local sailing club, which in my case was Lane Cove 12-foot Sailing Skip Club, and hang out all weekend. And I really, from 8 to kind of 18, it really was messing around in boats on the water. Started off in Sabo's and Flying 11's. Churbs, with my friend Alex Murray, we sailed the first cherub out of Lane Cove.
