Awkward Hugs, Simpleton Trivia & Math Meltdowns

The Rizzuto Show | Daily Comedy Podcast

September 24, 2026

How exactly are adults supposed to greet each other anymore? The Rizzuto Show dives into the surprisingly complicated world of handshakes, hugs, waves, kisses on the cheek and the absolutely unhinged 1% of people who apparently greet somebody new with a kiss directly on the lips.

Speakers Rizzuto, Lern, Moon Valjean, Tony Patrico, King Scott

Raruto.

Rizzuto (1:04)

Hey, here's a quick question. Okay, think back to the last time you met somebody for the first time. Maybe a neighbor, maybe a friend's friend, a co-worker, whatever. Maybe the car salesman at the dealership you went to, I don't know.

Did you shake their hand or hug them?

Lern (1:23)

Um, shook their hand.

Rizzuto (1:25)

The last time you met somebody for the first time, did you shake their hand or did you hug them?

Moon Valjean (1:30)

Very rare would it be a meat hug. You know, it's always going to be an extended hand.

Lern (1:38)

Yeah, right?

Tony Patrico (1:38)

Or the pat on the back thing, you know, with the come in.

Moon Valjean (1:41)

That's a hug. That's a man hug.

Tony Patrico (1:42)

That's a hug.

Lern (1:43)

Can I say this though? Like, if you've heard about somebody for a long time and you finally get to meet them, then I hug.

Rizzuto (1:51)

Well, then you go, oh!

Tony Patrico (1:53)

Oh, it's finally you!

Lern (1:55)

Brenda!

Moon Valjean (1:57)

Yeah, but that's rare.

Lern (1:59)

That is rare.

Tony Patrico (2:00)

Yeah, Snuggeroot and I kept hugging the whole time. It was awesome.

Rizzuto (2:03)

When you met Jimmy Snuggeroot the other day, shake his hand?

Tony Patrico (2:05)

Yeah, shake it. I tried to hug.

Lern (2:07)

You tried to hug and he wouldn't take it. He wouldn't accept it.

Rizzuto (2:09)

So New Paul asked Americans, how do you usually greet each of the following when you see them? And for someones we've just met, 51% of us use a handshake, 18% said a wave or a nod, 12% said nothing physical, just a hello or a hey. Yeah, I'm going to extend the hand.

And 5% said they greeted a stranger with a hug.

Moon Valjean (2:36)

You know, a rule that I kind of implemented on myself the last, I'd say a couple of years now, that is actually something that's really important to me now, is I never shake hands sitting down. I would never do that.

Lern (2:48)

That's good.

Rizzuto (2:48)

Oh, that's, I think that's rude.

Moon Valjean (2:50)

Yeah, like, I mean, if somebody comes up to you and you're seated, Stand up. and they're shaking your hand or they're meeting you or something like that, you always stand up and shake.

Lern (2:58)

Always.

Moon Valjean (2:59)

Yeah, not that I like was in a habit of sit shaking before, but I don't know, maybe something happened to me and I was like, this is weird. I'm going to make sure that I kind of put this rule on myself.

Rizzuto (3:09)

Okay, so a hug, you know, if you greet a stranger with a hug, there's a big difference. And as you were mentioning before, Lern, there's a big difference between a friend of a friend you've heard about, you know, through association.

And this is your first time meeting them. Fine, hug, fine. But like an HR rep who's interviewing you for a job, don't go in for the hug. That's a red flag.

Lern (3:31)

I mean, even corporate being in town this week, I mean, I did not go in for the hug for anybody. I always do the handshake with that. But then they insisted on the hug.

Rizzuto (3:38)

I was like, okay, I got the hug.

Lern (3:39)

I know you did. Jenny hugged me too at the end, but I shook her hand first.

Moon Valjean (3:44)

She hugged you? I got no hug.

Rizzuto (3:46)

Oh, I got, she gave me a hug.

Tony Patrico (3:47)

You got a hug? Do you guys get a kiss on the cheek?

King Scott (3:50)

She kissed you on the cheek?

Lern (3:51)

Nice. Dang it.

Moon Valjean (3:52)

You both got a hug?

Rizzuto (3:53)

I got a hug.

Lern (3:53)

That's absurd. She did say that this is a really good looking show. She was very complimentary of our looks in that meeting the other day.
