The number of Australians aged over 85 by 2026 will have tripled.

Bryce Leske (0:05)

I mean, if you put a little investing lens on that, it screams healthcare.

SPEAKER_3 (0:10)

Aged care, healthcare, retirement.

Bryce Leske (0:13)

It also screams the government touching our superannuation.

Alec Renehan (0:16)

You know what it screams? It screams a higher age for the age pension. Big time. No, it screams structural deficit, budget deficit. Oh no.

Bryce Leske (0:29)

Welcome to another episode of Equity Mates, a show where we explore what is possible in the world of investing. If you've just joined us for the very first time, a huge welcome to our community. My name is Bryce.

Alec Renehan (0:39)

And I'm Ren. And today we're talking about what Australia looks like in 40 years, why you need less than you think to retire. And Mr. Up is back to talk about a stock that's down, but maybe not out. But Bryce, before we get into all of that, some exciting news here at Equity Mates. Well, two pieces of exciting news, really.

Bryce Leske (0:58)

Yep.

Alec Renehan (0:59)

The first one, FinFest is sold out.

Bryce Leske (1:02)

We made it. We made it.

Yes. Very exciting news. So if you've missed out, have no fear, there is a waitlist on the website, as people might might cancel closer to the event. We will honor those that are on the waitlist. But for now, tickets, they're sold out. Yes.

Alec Renehan (1:18)

We did say they were going to be sold out. And we're excited that they are. So if you've got your ticket, we can't wait to see you there.

But that's not the only exciting thing that's happening at Equity Mates. We're growing, and you have the chance to join us.

Bryce Leske (1:30)

Yes. We are looking for a Senior Business Development Manager to come and join the team in our commercial team, looking for someone to help drive key commercial relationships and partnerships, work on all of the content integration that we do, secure new brand partners, and deliver all of the content campaigns. We should make it clear this is a contract role, 13-month contract role for maternity leave, but we love finding incredible talent and anything is possible in this business, so don't let that dissuade you from applying.

The headlines we're going to cover this morning, what does Australia look like in 40 years? The big question, and then Canva. It has had a shocking run of late. We're going to go into the four key things that Canva has been battling with. But let's start with the Intergenerational Report, Ren.

Alec Renehan (2:28)

Yeah, so this is the seventh Intergenerational Report the government has produced. We get it every five years.

Well, we actually got the last one in 2023 because there was a bit of a COVID disruption. But every five years, it's a 40 year snapshot of what Australia is meant to look like. You do have to take it with a bit of a grain of salt. Like 40 years is a long time to project. And some of them are a bit rosy. You know, the prediction for Australia's debt, quote, Australia's balance sheet is projected to be stronger at the end of the projected period. It's like, obviously, it's like how we know what's going to play out over 40 years. But I think there was some interesting things for us to think about as Australians and as investors.

For me, there were three key takeaways. The first one was the population story. So slowing population is the headline.

By 2065 and 2066, we're expected to be 39.3 million people. We're today at 27.9 million. That is a big jump up in terms of raw numbers. But in terms of population growth rate, it's actually slowing. Historically, we've grown at about 1.4 percent. It's set to grow at 0.9 percent for the foreseeable future. A big reason for that is falling fertility rate. So the fertility rate by 2065 is projected to be 1.34. It's now like 1.48. What it means is that by the 2060s, deaths will outnumber births for the first time. That's a milestone that Japan, South Korea, Germany, and Italy have hit. It's like when your population pyramid is very inverted. The number of Australians aged over 85 by 2026 will have tripled.

Bryce Leske (4:16)

I mean, if you put a little investing lens on that, it screams health care.

Alec Renehan (4:20)

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_3 (4:21)

Aged care, health care, retirement.

Bryce Leske (4:25)

It also screams the government touching our superannuation.
