Good morning, welcome to Wake Up Carolina! Tuesday morning, August 29, 843-661-0937 is our number. Good morning, No Shot, No Shot Josh.
Josh (0:08)
Good morning.

No Mask, No Mask Josh. That's right. Good morning, Royal Ref of Radio. Good morning. There's gonna be a lot of conversations this morning about masks. I made a promise yesterday, I didn't deliver on the promise. I was going to explain how some of these masks, what about some of these peer-reviewed research projects say they are indeed proving the mask works, the mask stops and infection transmission and all these other sorts of things. I think I can explain it in one Bangladesh study that included about 340,000 people. We'll get to that as the show progresses. We'll move around a good bit today. I want to begin by asking the Royal Ref of Radio because he's my radio aficionado.
I mean, I don't know anybody that's been in radio as long as Ref has.
Now, I also don't know anybody that has a shallow taste in music and radio as Ref does. So he kind of cuts both ways. He's got this extensive experience in radio and he hasn't learned anything. I mean, he really and truly still thinks safety dance is stairway to heaven.
He thinks one's about...
Royal Ref (1:17)
Not quite.
Ken Ro (1:18)
Close.
Royal Ref (1:19)
Both good songs, both hits.
Ken Ro (1:21)
Okay, here's question number one. You ready?
You've heard of Oliver Anthony.
Royal Ref (1:25)
Sure.
Ken Ro (1:26)
You've heard of Robert Zimmerman.
I have. Who is Robert Zimmerman?
Royal Ref (1:30)
That's Bob Dylan's real name.
Ken Ro (1:32)
Okay, that's Bob Dylan before he became Bob Dylan. I got a hippie kid. My hippie kid drives me crazy at times, but he's my hippie kid. My hippie kid believes, and Josh, you can jump in here, you're a younger guy, because I've asked you, I've given Josh an assignment this morning, and you've had time to kind of...
Yeah, mull over what I've asked you this morning. So, is there any chance at all that Oliver Anthony has been chosen as somewhat of a messenger for a moment in time speaking for a particular cause or generation?
Royal Ref (2:12)
Ooh.
Ken Ro (2:12)
I mean, you would agree that Robert Zimmerman...
Royal Ref (2:15)
Well, and I don't know how this relates to my years of radio experience, but that's an interesting question.
Ken Ro (2:22)
Go back to this.
Royal Ref (2:23)
Interesting.
Ken Ro (2:24)
Bob Dylan, you would agree.
You're not a big fan of his music. I get that. I mean, Rev told me before, full disclosure, he said, look, man, I'm not a big fan of Springsteen or Dylan, but I get Bruce.
I mean, I understand rock and roll superstar. I get all the four-hour shows and the big venues around the world. Yeah, I get that. I mean, I understand that. Not a big fan.
Royal Ref (2:43)
Has some hits, has some undeniable anthems in rock history. I give him all that.
Ken Ro (2:48)
And then you said that you're not a big fan, but I get it. I get it. I don't get Dylan. Not only am I not a big fan, I just don't get it. I mean, I just don't understand the intrigue, the borderline infatuation. Fair enough. What with Bob Dylan?
The fact that many people of credibility say as he spoke for a generation, whatever that means.
But he did, he did stir the soul. I mean, he really did. Dylan wrote about things at a time and place that were much more than music, much more than music. Oliver Anthony, is Oliver Anthony Robert Zimmerman?
Has, I mean, that's weird now, but because it's not what would Dylan have been in the age of internet. And I mean, Dylan had to be found in Greenwich Village and he had to sign a record deal and he wrote all these crazy lyrics to all these crazy songs that us real deep thinkers of high intellect find intriguing and people like Ray, just don't get it. I mean, I understand that. Everybody can't be as aptly gifted as yours.
Royal Ref (3:55)
Anyway, methods of distribution back in those days were totally different. Like you said, you had to have records or tapes or they were distributed amongst record stores to people.
Now obviously it's just a YouTube video that's gone viral for Oliver Anthony.
Ken Ro (4:10)
And you can have 40 million views in a week and a half when nobody knows your name in a prior week. I just thought about it when my son told me that this guy could be a person God chooses.
