Attorney or Not? Trump's Press Secretary Addresses Bar Exam Failure

Valuetainment

October 19, 2026

Katie Zacharia’s run as White House press secretary was over almost before it started. Patrick Bet-David and Tom break down the “lawyer vs. attorney” controversy, the moment Trump turned to her to answer for herself, and why Hannity grilling her on Fox was a sign her own side had turned.

White House Press Secretary, okay, White House Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia, I don't want to spend a lot of time on this, but I'm going to spend a few minutes on this.

She comes out and she does her day one. A lot of people said it wasn't the best day one. Now, it's kind of hard to follow up on Karoline Leavitt's, you know, shoes. It's not easy because she did such a good job, but she came up, she did her day one. She got some criticism on the fact that she wasn't fully there when she was giving some of the answers. She broke the story on what's going to happen with Kimberly Guilfoyle. And then stories came up about attorney, whether you're a lawyer or an attorney. And in one exchange, when Trump is there, I don't know if you have this clip, they asked Trump about Katie, whether she's a lawyer or an attorney, and Trump just turns around and says, what are you? And then she answers it. If you want to play this clip, go for it. I need audio. I thought you were very good. Watch this.

Watch.

SPEAKER_3 (1:27)

She said she's an attorney.

SPEAKER_4 (1:28)

Where did she pass the bar exam?

Patrick Bet-David (1:29)

Which state?

SPEAKER_5 (1:35)

Did she say China?

SPEAKER_3 (1:37)

That's no good.

Patrick Bet-David (1:40)

Look at the president. No, no, no, no, do me a favor. Go back seven seconds. Go back seven seconds. Look what Trump is doing. Okay, go a little bit more, a little bit more, a little bit more before he turns around. Okay, watch what he does. He turns to her, okay, where he's saying, you got to explain for yourself. Wait for this. He's looking at her because he's like, he's hoping the team probably filtered it out.

But right there, you know what look that is on the president?

SPEAKER_5 (2:08)

That's a skeptical look.

Patrick Bet-David (2:10)

That's a skeptical look. And then on top of that, forget everybody attacking her. That's their job. They're supposed to attack the press secret. It's not an easy job. I congratulated her, but it's a tough job to have. This is not a job you want to, you know, you go up to, you're going to have an easy time. She's married. She's got four kids. All this young kids she's got. Oh yeah, she's married with four kids and her husband's, I think in California, taking care of the kids.

And so the deal was if you're a lawyer, you're a JD. You're not necessarily a person that passed a bar exam. Attorney passed a bar exam.

Yesterday, Hannity grilled her on Fox. I don't have the clip to show it. I think it's like seven, eight minutes. We're not gonna show the whole thing. But on Hannity yesterday, he's like, well, what about this? And what about that? And what about this? And she was confronted. Now, that's the point. If it goes from here to Hannity and Hannity is a friend. I mean, this is kind of like, hey, maybe this is Anthony Scaramucci 2.0. We gotta move on.

SPEAKER_3 (3:06)

Spicy, very spicy.

Patrick Bet-David (3:07)

Yeah, maybe this is like Anthony Scaramucci 2.0. How long is this clip that you have? I just want to show a snippet of it. I don't want to show the whole thing. Okay, play the clip.

Tom (3:14)

I only have three questions in 14 minutes, and what might you do a little differently going forward?

SPEAKER_4 (3:20)

I can give you some unsolicited advice that's never gonna be a friendly room to you.
