**Mark Duffield** (0:56)
Has kicked two in the game so far, driving ball forward, oh, Sampi!
**SPEAKER_2** (1:01)
That is a contender.
**Ashley Sampi** (1:03)
What a lift if we've seen a day of marking today. That is Jeff Palmer on some bloke I know.
**Mark Duffield** (1:14)
Brian Taylor and Gary Lyon waxing lyrical about one of the all-time great AFL marks. Of course, Ashley Sampi at the MCG against Melbourne, absolutely achieving liftoff off the back of a Melbourne opponent. And Ashley joins us on the line now. Ashley, welcome.
**Ashley Sampi** (1:33)
Thanks, Mark. Thanks, Stuart.
**Mark Duffield** (1:35)
Hey, what do you remember about that mark?
**Ashley Sampi** (1:40)
Pretty much every step by step, pretty much every morning, every day.
**SPEAKER_5** (1:44)
Run us through it, Sam.
**Ashley Sampi** (1:45)
Run us through it.
But yeah, it was definitely memorable day. The kids don't like to watch it, but a lot of other fans still do and still congratulate me for it.
**Mark Duffield** (2:00)
Yeah, it was a great mark. And another memory coming through from Travis on the text line, Sam. This one probably not such a pleasant memory. He says, every time I hear Leo Barry, you star from the 5 Grand Final, I cringe because all I see is a blatant free kick to Ashley Sampi. Of course, Ty Cannelli hanging on like grim death, making sure you didn't leave the ground.
**Ashley Sampi** (2:21)
Yeah, definitely. Funny thing because I've seen him probably that night, I think, walking down the street and he said, I purposely held you because I knew what you could do.
Parts of me wanted to hit him, but I couldn't do that and it's like, well, you cost me, hopefully cost me a premiership medal.
**Mark Duffield** (2:41)
Of course, another thing and we don't want to bring up too many bad memories for you, but the 3 Derby, the first one of the year, you kick four goals three from 12 disposals, absolutely lit up the game.
The journos voted you as the Glendinning medalist and they got overruled. Has that ever been addressed with you?
**Ashley Sampi** (3:09)
Not quite. I think the God Town's in and spoke to me over the last couple of years before I received it. And spoke about it. I didn't think too much of it. And I think it's sort of more of a...
more for the family that sort of kept asking, or kept saying that I deserved it and all that. But yeah, it was a great achievement. My first derby, I was just proud to get a win.
**SPEAKER_5** (3:43)
Samp, my most favourite memory of you, I'd been a Freo man, I never went to West Coast Eagles games, but I was rung up by the great Ron Joseph, who did a lot of work with Sydney and North Melbourne, and then was, you know, recruited the Cracker Brothers to North Melbourne back in the day.
And I remember him saying, come on, we're going to the footy, because North was in town and, you know, off to the footy we went. So there we were, sitting in amongst the hoi poloi there of the West Coast Eagles members and, you know, all the big cheesels that were there. And you, I remember you picked up the ball and you hit the pack, you hit a pack, and people talk about hitting packs and what happens when it's done right. And I'd never actually seen it done quite as well as you did it this day. You gathered the ball on the half volley, hit this pack, blew it apart, and then you kept running and then just did this lovely kick of the goal, got the goal.
It was breathtaking. That was the best thing I've seen of you, other than the mark, obviously, because you got the double bump, which gives it that sense of where it was. And I was just curious, mate, what are you up to now? Because you were diagnosed with MS not so long ago. And I'm just seeing how you've managed that, because that's a significant health issue to be able to handle those sorts of things. How have you done that, mate?
