Apple has finally entered the foldable phone race with the $3,499 iPhone Duo, but is it enough to kick-start the John Ternus era?

TopicsInvestingBusinessEducationHow To

SPEAKER_1 (0:00)

It's called the iPhone Duo. We were actually laughing in the office before. Already online, it's getting called the iPhone Duo because you need dual incomes to afford it.

SPEAKER_2 (0:09)

Every man and his dog is playing that game. And we've seen what happens in Korea, for instance, which was kind of like the scenario in the coal mine, when things change.

SPEAKER_3 (0:18)

Frontier AI labs are solving problems that humans haven't been able to solve. Humans, unfortunately, using AI are getting dumber. You think that 44 bucks a week, not that big a deal. I can take it out of my super. It's not going to have a meaningful impact on my retirement. But just that amount is 170 grand in your time.

SPEAKER_1 (0:39)

Welcome to another episode of Equity Mates, a show where we explore what's possible in the world of investing. If you've just joined us for the very first time, a huge welcome to our community. My name is Bryce.

SPEAKER_3 (0:49)

And I'm Ren. And today we're talking about Apple's new phone. Pimp My Portfolio is back. Henry Jennings is taking a look at a community member's portfolio. And Super September continues as we look at the debate in Canberra and talk about how small contributions can add up to big retirements.

SPEAKER_1 (1:06)

Well, another massive episode to get through, Ren. Very much looking forward to getting stuck into it. But as always, we'll start with FinFest because last episode, we announced that we are just shy of 200 tickets left. That is now under 100 left.

SPEAKER_3 (1:21)

Yes, they are selling fast. You actually guaranteed that we would be sold out in the last episode.

So glad that you're being proven right. Less than 100 tickets to go. So if you haven't got your ticket, go to equitymates.com/finfest because there's going to be 30, 40 sessions. There's so many I haven't even counted them all. A number of great speakers, food trucks, bars. But we just wanted to give you a sense of some of the other sessions that you can expect alongside Bill Ackman.

SPEAKER_1 (1:49)

We've got a great breadth. So you'll hear from Steve Solomon. He's the go-to market director at Open AI.

SPEAKER_3 (1:54)

Former 400-meter champion in Australia, Australian champion.

SPEAKER_1 (1:58)

So that's going to be an awesome session. Tim Doyle, the eucalyptus entrepreneur, is going to be on the main stage with Ali, talking about the journey he went on to sell eucalyptus for 1.6 billion.

SPEAKER_3 (2:09)

Yeah, he never pulls his punches when he's talking about startups in Australia. So if you've got a dream of starting a company or an investing in one, that will be a great session.

SPEAKER_1 (2:17)

And then Marcus Puddly.

SPEAKER_3 (2:20)

Someone else who doesn't pull his punches.

SPEAKER_1 (2:21)

Doesn't pull his punches. His session is called, You Can Time the Market.

SPEAKER_3 (2:25)

Hmm, controversial. Maybe I'll have to get up and debate him. But if you want to see those sessions and plenty more, make sure you secure your ticket. They're only 55 bucks. It's going to be the best day on Australia's financial calendar. Don't miss it. equitymates.com/finfest.

SPEAKER_1 (2:40)

FinFest is proudly brought to you by Betashares. News that we're going to cover off in today's episode. Apple has launched their newest iPhone and AI is getting smarter while we, Ren, are getting dumber.

SPEAKER_4 (2:54)

So let's...

SPEAKER_3 (2:56)

That's not just you and I.

SPEAKER_1 (2:58)

No, no, no. But let's start with Apple because at the time of recording overnight, the new CEO John, he had his first product announcement, which was the new iPhone.

SPEAKER_3 (3:10)

Yeah. John Ternus, new CEO of Apple in the product announcement, Tim Cook handed over the reins to John Ternus.

They announced a number of new products, slight upgrades to the Apple Watch and this and that. Price upgrades.

SPEAKER_4 (3:24)

What?

SPEAKER_1 (3:24)

Price upgrades.

SPEAKER_4 (3:25)

A lot of price upgrades, yeah.

SPEAKER_3 (3:27)

And then 53 minutes into his presentation, John borrowed a tactic that Steve Jobs used to use when he would do product announcements. He would say, oh, and just one more thing, and then drop the big, you know, the iPod or whatever it was, the iPhone. John Ternus uses Steve Jobs' tactic to drop his first new product as the Apple CEO.

And it's up to you whether it's a winner or not. A foldable iPhone.

SPEAKER_1 (3:55)

Foldable iPhone. Now foldable iPhone isn't new in the market. The Apple's rivals, they first released their phones seven years ago. So this has been a long time in the waiting.

SPEAKER_3 (4:06)

Yeah. So Samsung has one and Google has one to be specific about their rivals. And actually some of the Chinese phone makers also have them.
