Hey, babes, it's Paris Hilton. So I was checking my points balance in the Hilton Honors app the other day. And yeah, I've got about a billion, which feels excessive even for me. Just kidding. You can never have too many Hilton Honors points. And I want to do something iconic this summer. So I'm giving away all my Paris points. Just find somewhere you've always wanted to stay, then go to my socials or Hilton's and tell me about it. Just make sure you're a Hilton Honors member and I might be sending you Paris points. Because when you want points that make your summer even hotter, it matters where you stay.

Apple has launched a program called Apple Upgrade, allowing customers to lease an iPhone 17E for 1799s a month through a partnership with the fintech company Klarna. Right. They took the traditional purchasing model and completely replaced it with a multi-year rental agreement managed by a third party Swedish bank. Yeah.

**SPEAKER_6** (1:50)
You are no longer buying a piece of hardware. You're subscribing to a physical device on this rolling monthly basis.

**SPEAKER_4** (1:57)
Which is wild. The entire concept of hardware ownership is being quietly dismantled and replaced by a permanent financing structure, and is happening with the most ubiquitous consumer product on the planet.

**SPEAKER_6** (2:08)
And that financing structure extends far beyond just the entry-level phone too.

**SPEAKER_7** (2:12)
Oh, yeah.

**SPEAKER_6** (2:13)
The program covers their entire core product line. I mean, you could lease an Apple Watch starting at 1199 a month.

**SPEAKER_7** (2:18)
Wow.

**SPEAKER_6** (2:18)
The iPad Mini is also setting at 1199 a month. And if you want a MacBook Air, the entry point is 2499 a month. They basically atomized the upfront purchase price of an entire technological ecosystem into these fragmented bi-weekly or monthly payments.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:34)
So you could literally walk out of a store with a complete suite of hardware.

**SPEAKER_6** (2:37)
Phone, watch, tablet, lapgapha.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:39)
Yeah, right. The whole thing. And your upfront cost is essentially zero. You just add about $60 to your monthly fixed expenses for the next three years.

**SPEAKER_6** (2:47)
Exactly. Which brings up the central question we are looking at today.
When we see a multi-year lease for everyday tech, does it mean consumers are managing their cash wisely by preserving their liquidity?

**SPEAKER_4** (3:02)
Or does it signal that households are stretched to their absolute financial limits and can no longer afford the basic tools of modern life outright?

**SPEAKER_6** (3:11)
Right. Because if you choose to keep your cash in a high-yield savings account and pay $1,799 a month for a phone, that is a strategic financial decision.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:19)
You're sure.

**SPEAKER_6** (3:20)
But if you are paying $1,799 a month because you physically do not have the $800 required to buy the phone.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:26)
Which is the case for a lot of people.

**SPEAKER_6** (3:28)
Yeah, that indicates a fundamental fracture in consumer purchasing power.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:32)
And the mechanics of how this program operates really clarify which of those scenarios is actually playing out. When you sign up for Apple Upgrade, you commit to a monthly payment for a set term, usually 24 or 36 months.

**SPEAKER_6** (3:45)
Right.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:46)
And you do not own the device during this period. When you reach the end of that term, you are presented with a choice.
You can return the device to Apple and walk away.

**SPEAKER_6** (3:55)
Which nobody does.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:56)
Right. Or you can trade it in for a newer model, which essentially resets the clock and keeps you trapped in the monthly payment cycle forever.

**SPEAKER_6** (4:03)
Yeah.

**SPEAKER_4** (4:04)
Or you can pay off whatever the remaining balance is to finally own the hardware outright.
