Anthropic rejects six billion dollar Decart deal

Elon Musk Podcast

September 9, 2026

AI developer Anthropic has reportedly halted its plans to acquire the Israeli startup Decart for an estimated $6 billion. The proposed deal fell through following a rigorous due diligence process, though the two organizations may still pursue a future commercial partnership.

Anthropic spent weeks conducting full due diligence on a $6 billion acquisition of the Israeli AI startup, Decart, and then they just walked away with nothing signed.

SPEAKER_5 (1:26)

Yeah, which is telling because when a frontier lab actually opens the books for a deal of that size, they are looking at absolutely everything. I mean, due diligence at that financial tier means going through the corporate history line by line. They are interrogating the engineering team, and most importantly, they are tearing apart the proprietary code base just to see if the architecture holds up.

SPEAKER_4 (1:48)

Right.

SPEAKER_5 (1:48)

So finding out why Anthropic walked away after committing that level of internal scrutiny, that is basically the whole puzzle for us to look at today.

SPEAKER_4 (1:56)

We have to look at what Decart actually builds to understand what was on the table here, because they operate these dual product lines. First, they build infrastructure software, which is designed specifically to optimize hardware workloads.

And second, they build real time world models capable of generating interactive video and fully realized environments.

SPEAKER_5 (2:14)

Which, just on the surface, doing both of those things simultaneously, lacks obvious structural logic.

SPEAKER_4 (2:19)

Yeah, it sounds weird.

SPEAKER_5 (2:21)

It does, because optimizing hardware workloads is about deep, invisible server level efficiency, right? Building video generation environments is entirely about front end user experience and visual rendering.

You have to wonder why a startup trying to shave dollars off a cloud compute bill is also building interactive simulation tools.

SPEAKER_4 (2:42)

Exactly. And it forces a specific question for you to consider as we get into this. Does walking away from a deal this large mean the acquisition market has hit a hard financial ceiling, or does it mean the technology simply could not survive the rigorous scrutiny of a frontier lab?

SPEAKER_5 (2:57)

Well, in the connection between those two products, it really comes down to how they stress test their own technology.

SPEAKER_4 (3:02)

Right, because maximizing hardware utilization leads naturally to continuous media simulation. Generating real-time video is perhaps the most punishing task you can run on a processor.

SPEAKER_5 (3:12)

Yeah, it requires constant memory access. It needs aggressive calculation speeds that push silicon to its physical limits. So if they want to prove their infrastructure optimization software actually works, building a real-time world model acts as the ultimate proof of concept.

SPEAKER_4 (3:27)

If the backend software can handle rendering those complex environments continuously without the servers failing or overheating, the core routing technology is basically verified. They are essentially building the hardest possible application just to prove their plumbing does not leak.

SPEAKER_4 (3:51)

So getting back to it, Anthropic was primarily interested in that plumbing because cutting down the compute bill is currently the single largest structural priority for developers training artificial intelligence.

SPEAKER_5 (4:01)

Oh, absolutely. The cost of raw computing power dictates exactly how fast these labs can experiment or train and deploy new models. It is the dominant financial constraint governing the entire industry.

Everything comes back to the optimization stack.

SPEAKER_4 (4:16)

Yeah. And Decart built technology that sits directly between the AI software and the physical computing chips.
