Anthropic is delaying a planned $2 trillion public offering due to artificial intelligence safety concerns. Despite internal projections showing their annualized revenue is on track to exceed $100 billion.

I mean, you are looking at a company sitting on $100 billion in annualized revenue, which is a threshold that dictates an immediate public market debut in almost every scenario in financial history.

SPEAKER_5 (1:54)

Yeah.

SPEAKER_4 (1:54)

And they are deliberately pushing the timeline back.

SPEAKER_5 (1:58)

Yeah. That revenue number is not a projection based on user growth or speculative future product lines. That is cash flowing through the system right now.

SPEAKER_4 (2:07)

Primarily from recurring subscriptions and enterprise contracts.

SPEAKER_5 (2:11)

Exactly. I mean, in the software industry, getting that specific $100 billion mark places a company in an elite tier of revenue generation.

SPEAKER_4 (2:19)

Usually alongside legacy tech giants that have been building their customer bases for three decades.

SPEAKER_5 (2:24)

Right. And reaching that number, this quickly creates an immense amount of pressure from early investors. The venture capital firms and institutional backers who want to see their equity become liquid.

SPEAKER_4 (2:35)

The expectation is that you file the paperwork, you ring the bell, and you let the public market absorb the equity.

SPEAKER_5 (2:41)

Right. So pushing back against that pressure and telling the people who funded your initial compute costs that they have to wait because of internal safety protocols is entirely counter to how tech infrastructure is capitalized.

SPEAKER_4 (2:53)

The tension there is difficult to resolve. If you just look at the raw financial incentives, you have the desire to secure a $2 trillion valuation on one hand, and then this deliberate decision to hit the brakes on the other.

SPEAKER_5 (3:07)

Because financial markets rarely reward companies for slowing down.

SPEAKER_4 (3:10)

No, the traditional model, going back to the earliest days of Silicon Valley, is to accelerate through any internal friction and let the public market capitalize the momentum.

SPEAKER_5 (3:20)

If the system is breaking, you fix it with the capital you raise from the public offering.

SPEAKER_4 (3:24)

Right, but the central question here is completely different from fixing a broken server or patching a leaky database.

SPEAKER_5 (3:31)

Yeah, how do you go about proving to institutional investors that an increasingly independent system will not go rogue? And how do you manage to prove that before asking those same investors for $2 trillion?

SPEAKER_4 (3:45)

Because investors understand software bugs, they understand downtime.

SPEAKER_5 (3:48)

Right, what they do not understand and what they cannot accurately price into a valuation model is a non-deterministic system making independent decisions that could violate enterprise compliance standards.

SPEAKER_4 (4:00)

You are asking mutual funds and pension funds to buy into a product that even the creators admit they do not fully understand at a fundamental mathematical level.

SPEAKER_5 (4:09)

Which brings us to the financial reality driving that valuation demand. It comes directly from the consumer spending data.

SPEAKER_4 (4:16)

Yeah, if you track where consumer money is actually flowing right now, the numbers explain the revenue surge that is pushing them toward that $100 billion mark.
