SPEAKER_4 (1:17)
And that feels like just a small preview for the next three days.
Perfect debut for the 20-year-old, for Team Europe, puts another point on the board. Wow.
SPEAKER_6 (1:38)
That's unbelievable. That's just too much. That's just magic there. Just as the match went on, Carlos Alcaraz is just starting to find the A game.
That doesn't bode well for Team World.
Andy Roddick (2:07)
Man, I don't know why you all get a bad rap for weather. I don't understand it.
Jon Wertheim (2:12)
Where are we, California again?
Andy Roddick (2:13)
This is beautiful. Hello, San Diego. No, we're Served, brought to you by ServiceNow. This is Jon Wertheim, producer, Mike. Give him a round of applause real quick.
My name is Andy. We are thrilled to be here at the Laver Cup. Before we talk about what's going to happen today, I think we get to the highlights from yesterday.
Jon Wertheim (2:34)
Get a rundown of the lead for Team Europe.
SPEAKER_8 (2:39)
We won. Yeah. All right.
Partizans here in the front row.
Andy Roddick (2:44)
Yeah. To open things up, we had Casper Ruud, former number two in the world against Sarundolo who just recently made the quarterfinals of the US Open. Flashing the Draper early.
Listen, that court is not easy to hit it through, but Casper with his spin profile, that forehand, recession proof, right? Sarundolo normally hits the forehand, but flag that one, JW.
SPEAKER_8 (3:09)
Yes, Sarundolo actually won more points in this very tightly contested match. This was the 10th time these two had played each other. They actually played in the Laver Cup two years ago and Sarundolo won that one, but you know what happened yesterday?
Andy Roddick (3:22)
Yep, and Casper Low on confidence, Low on health coming in, had to pull out of the US Open. So that had to feel like almost an upset for Team Europe. But the veteran Casper Rude getting through yesterday, obviously second serve points won when you can defend over 50% of your second serve points, then you are in a good spot. And that left it up to Brandon Nakashima, who's been playing great this summer against Jakub Menchik. Listen, Nakashima, all-core game, as we see right there, is able to come in, flashing the slice, hitting the passing shot.
SPEAKER_8 (4:00)
20 minutes before his opponent got a game.
Andy Roddick (4:03)
And Nakashima doing a little fist pump is like the rest of us doing cartwheels.
SPEAKER_4 (4:06)
Cartwheels, exactly.
Andy Roddick (4:08)
He's not one to give you a ton of emotion there, but Menchik was able to fight back, said, I'm not gonna give up on this early.
That forehand cross court, which we've seen so many times, the win in Miami last year, good run at Roland Garros this year, but Nakashima stayed the course. How about the first two matches going to a third set breaker?
SPEAKER_8 (4:30)
Breaker, right?
Andy Roddick (4:31)
That's it. You see Andre getting pumped there. It's fun to see Andre this into it when Nakashima is winning.
SPEAKER_8 (4:39)
I'll tell you, he actually told Nakashima, let's see a little emotion out there.
Andre said, you know, sometimes it's like AI. That can be great, but we need to see some emotion. And we said, oh, oh, two is the arena, but not the deficit. It's 1-0 now.
Andy Roddick (4:53)
And then we have a couple of Laver Cup rookies, Rafa Hodar, who started the year at 240 plus in the world. Bublik, who has criticized this event before, but was happy to jump on the team when he was eligible.
