Hey, folks, welcome to the DarkHorse Podcast live stream. It is 3.46. Do I remember that correctly from what you told me just moments before we went live?
Heather Heying (0:15)
Your memory is not failing at that level, yes.
Bret Weinstein (0:18)
That's somewhat comforting, I guess.
Heather Heying (0:20)
As far as I can tell at any level. Okay. Yeah. In the seconds domain, I think you're just fine.
Bret Weinstein (0:26)
Yeah, although that's a risky domain because it's very easy to acquire, what was your name again? Then they say their name and a moment's distraction. It's like, oh, now I've lost it.
Heather Heying (0:37)
That's a matter of caring, isn't it?
Bret Weinstein (0:38)
No, it's a matter of- Yeah, yeah. Right, exactly.
It is October 7th, which means among other things that it is the anniversary of October 7th, the third anniversary and we are not going to be talking about October 7th today. Probably, it should be revisited in a later discussion. But it is certainly an event that has shaped history and radically changed. What we think we know about the event has radically changed in the aftermath of the event, which in its own way is very troubling.
Heather Heying (1:20)
And the event disrupted conversations and agreements and amalgamations of people that seemed undisruptible, even when those people don't seem to be related to what was happening in Israel and in Gaza and between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
Bret Weinstein (1:40)
Yeah, it disrupted virtually every conversation that wasn't narrowly focused with, you know, everybody of one mind about events in the Middle East. It cut across all of those coalitions and discussions and disrupted as a gentle term, wrecked the goodwill that many had established across many topics.
Heather Heying (2:02)
Speaking of disruption, we're going to talk about sexual aggression and also plague this week, both of which are big disruptors.
Bret Weinstein (2:10)
Wow. Yeah, this Cornell 7 situation is a shocking topic and one that brings us right to the heart of many of the discussions, that connects many of the discussions that we've been having about West and-
Heather Heying (2:30)
Yep, and it's as evolutionary as things get.
Bret Weinstein (2:33)
That is absolutely true.
Heather Heying (2:34)
So we're going to top the hour after we pay our rent and do our ads. We're just going to review some of what has been claimed and what we think we know collectively, and with some discourse in the middle of that, I'm sure, but then arrive at what we think it means and how all of this happened.
Where can the blame be pointed given that there are a lot of fingers being pointed?
Bret Weinstein (3:07)
Yeah. I think on both the topics we're going to be discussing, both the Cornell 7 and the plague situation, you're going to get a take here that is very different than you will get anywhere else because both of these things are through and through evolutionary from many different levels.
Stick around.
Heather Heying (3:28)
You also get an unusual take. So I have a pile of books here bigger than last week. We are offering our books signed in whatever, not whatever, within reason.
Oh, wow, I just messed up. Could you fix that?
Bret Weinstein (3:45)
Yeah.
Heather Heying (3:47)
In whatever way you like, we're not selling off our last copies of any of these, but we've got a number of copies of A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide in Translation. We've got A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide Not in Translation in the original English in which we wrote it. We've also got Antipode, my first book written over 20 years ago, available on our website at darkhorsepodcast.org.
So the two in English are Antipode, Seasons with the Extraordinary Wildlife and Culture of Madagascar from 2002, St. Martin's Press and A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century, Evolution and the Challenges of Modern Life from Portfolio and Imprint of Penguin, published in September of 2001 But then we also have a number of copies in other languages. We've got one copy left in Czech.
Bret Weinstein (4:35)
Yeah. Here, let me read a little bit from it.
Heather Heying (4:37)
Okay, do it. Go for it.
Bret Weinstein (4:39)
Actually, I don't read any Czech, unfortunately.
Heather Heying (4:41)
How about you read this one then? This one is in Thai.
We've got a few more copies. You don't want the Thai one?
Bret Weinstein (4:46)
Okay.
Heather Heying (4:46)
Thai. We've got Thai. Really cool. We've got Polish. Polish, I said. We've got Portuguese. This is the Brazilian Portuguese edition.
Spanish. This is the only one in translation that's in hard copy. Spanish.
