An Inhospitable Ranch Rant & Was The Venice Seafood Schlep Worth It?
Mad Food
October 3, 2026
Jordan asks Max for a reality check and wonders if he's entitled after a recent experience at a pizzeria featuring not enough ranch dressing, an ornery owner, and Diet Coke corkage that may explain it all.

All right, Mad Food, I'm Jordan, Max is here, and two dining experiences to discuss today.
We have often had moments with Max, and moments with Jordan are usually like tales of the chubby, and this is kind of a tale of the chubby, but not traditionally speaking, okay? Okay, Max has no idea where I'm going with this.
Max Shapiro (0:27)
I don't.
Jordan Okun (0:28)
All right, okay, I need, this is something I've never asked of from you before.
Max Shapiro (0:34)
Oh.
Jordan Okun (0:35)
Because I don't think you're qualified to give it.
Max Shapiro (0:38)
Oh, shit.
Jordan Okun (0:39)
But you are in this case.
Max Shapiro (0:41)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (0:41)
I need a reality check.
Max Shapiro (0:45)
Uh-huh.
Jordan Okun (0:45)
Okay, and you know my world is upside down when I need Max to give me the reality check, and I do not mean that disrespectfully, okay?
He's the more intelligent one. He's the one with the czar loafers.
Max Shapiro (1:03)
I also have our legacy loafers, by the way, if you want a more expensive loafer.
Jordan Okun (1:07)
Propecia worked on him.
But Max tends to not always live in reality with certain human interactions and emotions, and I tend to. But something happened recently, and it involves hospitality, okay? And which he knows so well. So I am bringing this situation to him to decide if I am in the wrong for thinking a certain way.
Max Shapiro (1:33)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (1:33)
Okay.
Max Shapiro (1:34)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (1:35)
All right. Is any of that unfair?
Max Shapiro (1:38)
No. I mean, the way our dynamic is, is I do something and you just make fun of me about it.
Jordan Okun (1:45)
But a lot of times, you know, you're very gullible, which is a very sweet trait of yours.
Max Shapiro (1:51)
Yeah.
Jordan Okun (1:52)
But also sometimes you're just not living in reality and understanding things.
Max Shapiro (1:57)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (1:58)
Right? Like the IQ very high, the EQ not as high as the IQ.
Max Shapiro (2:03)
EQ high in areas.
Jordan Okun (2:05)
Right. And I think with hospitality, you're gonna, you're the one to come to on this. Okay. Okay. And I want to preface this by saying the following story does not make me entitled.
Max Shapiro (2:20)
Great. Thank you for prefacing.
Jordan Okun (2:22)
Okay. I'm just curious.
Okay. It's curiosity. Right? Not entitled. Okay, Max?
Max Shapiro (2:30)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (2:31)
Okay.
Max Shapiro (2:31)
Still don't know where this is going.
Jordan Okun (2:33)
An okay audience?
Max Shapiro (2:34)
Okay. Yeah.
Jordan Okun (2:34)
Who called us entitled? Why did they call us entitled?
Max Shapiro (2:38)
A number of people.
Jordan Okun (2:39)
Cause we don't wait for certain restaurants?
Max Shapiro (2:43)
Well, whatever.
Continuing. Okay.
Jordan Okun (2:47)
And this is going to remain a blind item.
Max Shapiro (2:50)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (2:50)
Okay. I'm not looking to cause problems for businesses. I'm not calling out certain businesses.
Because most likely, I am in the wrong. Really? Well, maybe, maybe I am. Maybe I am entitled. I don't know. Maybe I'm making a pod segment out of nothing. Okay. Sorry, folks. These two episodes a week, it's tough work.
All right. So, I recently visited a pizzeria, okay? I had not yet experienced it on my journey to see if LA can get this bar pie tavern pizza movement right. Because I've not been that impressed with LA's effort on those styles of pizza. I mean, we agree. Quarter Sheets is delicious, but it isn't really a tavern or bar pie. It's something else that we enjoy very much.
Max Shapiro (3:49)
Yes.
Jordan Okun (3:49)
Okay. And we recently experienced Pizza Will's thin and crispy crust, the new crust at the new pizzeria, say, and it's wildly light and crunchy, and it may be the only crust of his I now want to eat.
I just want to eat more options of toppings on it. Okay. But again, that's not even in the combo of bar pies and tavern style pizza.
Max Shapiro (4:12)
No, not at all.
Jordan Okun (4:13)
Okay. So off to this pizza place, I went and they're doing tavern pizza and I had not eaten it yet.
Max Shapiro (4:22)
Are they calling it tavern or bar?
Jordan Okun (4:24)
I honestly don't know.
Max Shapiro (4:26)
Okay.
Jordan Okun (4:28)
But it is a tavern style pizza. And I was ready and I was excited and I had been thinking about wanting to go to this place for a while now. Okay.
And I was ready. I was deeply fasted.
