A word of warning. This podcast explores graphic and disturbing stories and includes some strong language. It therefore may not be suitable for our young listeners or other folks who may find it disturbing. Hello and welcome to True Crime News, the podcast covering high profile and under the radar cases from across the country every week. I'm your host, Ana Garcia. Our case this week, he was an American Idol contestant, and now he is a convicted killer. Few will remember Caleb Flynn from his performance on that show. Oh, but his murder trial, that was pretty unforgettable. It revealed what a horrible lying cheating husband he was, choosing to kill his wife of 15 years so he could be with his much younger lover, the 20-year-old intern that he met at church where he worked as a pastor. Police say he staged the murder scene to look like a home invasion.
Listen to what he said to 911
Will Updike (0:56)
Somebody broke into my home, somebody broke into my home and shot my wife.
Luis Bolaños (0:59)
She got two shots to her head, blood everywhere, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.
Ana Garcia (1:04)
Okay, you suddenly find your wife in bed, unresponsive and bleeding. How do you know that she's been shot twice in the back of the head? Unless you are the one who put those bullets there.
We are recording this on Friday, October 2nd of 2026 Our guest today is the one and only Luis Bolaños, a former homicide detective, a private investigator, the founder of GetBit Investigations, and an advocate for victims' rights and a dear friend of the show. Luis, welcome back. I've missed you.
Luis Bolaños (1:31)
Hi, Anne. I miss you too. It's been a while. It's always good to catch up, but somehow it's mostly about crime discussion lately.
Ana Garcia (1:39)
I know. This one, we covered this case originally in the podcast when Caleb Flynn was arrested. There were so many red flags about his behavior, the things he said, but now after the trial and all the dirty laundry comes out, oh my God, what is wrong with this man?
Luis Bolaños (1:57)
Oh, he's just, he's in love with himself. I think it was problem number one. And he was dying for attention and he's got it now.
Ana Garcia (2:05)
Oh, yeah. He's got it now. And all this boo-hooing in court.
Listen, dude, there are 100,000 text messages that are presented during your trial. Your former mistress is reading them out loud and you're sitting there weeping. You are accused of murdering the mother of your two daughters and you're crying?
Luis Bolaños (2:26)
Those were tears because he was caught. He's upset he was caught not for anything else.
And his own words, as he knows now better than anybody else, his own words destroyed him.
Ana Garcia (2:38)
Right. He literally wrote in text messages, I want her gone.
I want to kill her. If I could kill her without God getting mad at me without me having to go to prison, I would do it. Who in their right mind says and writes these things?
Luis Bolaños (2:55)
Right, nobody. And is tumultuous a good word for this? That doesn't even get a good picture. The thousands, over 100,000 text messages averaging 300 a day between Caleb, this clown, this rodent of a man, and his mistress.
Ana Garcia (3:14)
Oh my God, unbelievable. The trial lasted just nine days, but everyone is into true crime. And I think the reason people find it so fascinating is because you cannot believe the human behavior that is revealed during these cases. It's so outrageous. So in nine days, the details were jaw-dropping, especially when the former mistress took the stand. I mean, it was riveting. I mean, she even told the jury that they would have sex in his truck, in the parking lot of Chipotle. Lady, what did you see in this guy?
Luis Bolaños (3:53)
Yeah, exactly. I have no idea what the draw was there. But, you know, she had her own issues, right? She doesn't come to this with clean hands herself.
Ana Garcia (4:02)
Yes, although she did say, and we're going to get into this, she did say that when she first met him, that he told her that the relationship between him and his wife was that of roommates, that their marriage was essentially over, and they were staying together for the girls. And in all of these text messages, he would go on and on about how, you know, divorce. But the problem with divorces, we're going to get into it, is that he didn't want to lose his status in the community if he divorced.
