Alphabet Funds Orbital AI With SpaceX Gains

Elon Musk Podcast

July 27, 2026

Alphabet’s Q2 2026 financial results reveal a historic $112.1 billion net income, largely inflated by massive paper gains from its equity stakes in SpaceX and Anthropic.
**SPEAKER_1** (0:00)
Alphabet just reported an eye-watering net income of over $112 billion.
But the primary driver wasn't search advertising or cloud computing. It was nearly $100 billion in unrealized, locked up paper games from equity stakes in SpaceX and Anthropic.

**SPEAKER_2** (0:17)
Right, and at the exact same time Alphabet posted that historic profit, their free cash flow swung negative to the tune of nearly $6 billion, forcing them to issue new stock just to pay for physical AI infrastructure.

**SPEAKER_1** (0:29)
So it really makes you wonder how long can tech giants rely on the soaring paper valuations of AI and space startups to cover the crushing physical costs of the AI infrastructure race, and what happens when they literally run out of room on earth to build it.

**SPEAKER_2** (0:45)
Yeah, you really have to look at the accounting mechanics behind that headline profit figure to understand the disconnect.

**SPEAKER_1** (0:50)
Yeah.

**SPEAKER_2** (0:50)
Because Alphabet's core business is actually growing.

**SPEAKER_1** (0:53)
Right.

**SPEAKER_2** (0:54)
Like Cloud Revenue was of 82%. Right. Yeah. And Google Search and other services were up 17%.
But all of those operating numbers, they're completely overshadowed by the financial reporting rules. Public corporations are required to measure their equity investments at fair market value.

**SPEAKER_1** (1:10)
Right. They have to mark them to market, which means they're required to recognize those unrealized holding gains or losses, I guess, directly in their income statement.

**SPEAKER_2** (1:20)
Exactly. So let's look at the math here.
An initial $1 billion investment in SpaceX, that they made alongside Fidelity a decade ago, that diluted down to about 5 percent.

**SPEAKER_1** (1:32)
Okay.

**SPEAKER_2** (1:32)
But it's now marked at over $94 billion. Additionally, their stake in Anthropic is marked at over $124 billion.

**SPEAKER_1** (1:40)
Which is just crazy. I mean, that markup happened after the AI company's private valuation nearly tripled.

**SPEAKER_2** (1:46)
Right.

**SPEAKER_1** (1:46)
But there is this massive paradox here, because paper wealth doesn't buy graphics processing units, you know. It doesn't pour concrete for terrestrial data centers.

**SPEAKER_2** (1:56)
No, it definitely doesn't. And Alphabet's future infrastructure commitments just skyrocketed by half a trillion dollars.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:03)
To over $800 billion.

**SPEAKER_2** (2:05)
Yeah, it's wild. It basically puts them in the liquidity trap.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:07)
Yeah.

**SPEAKER_2** (2:08)
They're sitting on over $200 billion in combined equity, but they still had to go out and raise nearly $50 billion in stock and over $20 billion in debt.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:16)
Because the SpaceX shares are entirely restricted by post-IPO lockup agreements, so they can't even touch it.

**SPEAKER_2** (2:22)
Right. They can't sell it. And the only reason this massive paper game triggered now, of all times, is because SpaceX just completed its market debut.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:31)
Which created a public price that basically forced Alphabet's hand on the balance sheet.

**SPEAKER_2** (2:43)
So, getting into that debut, SpaceX's listing was the largest in history. I mean, raising over $86 billion.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:51)
And that includes the green shoe option, right?

**SPEAKER_2** (2:53)
Yeah, including the green shoe. And they did it at a fixed subscription price of $135 per share.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:00)
Which gave SpaceX an implied valuation of nearly $1.8 trillion, like instantly making it the seventh largest public enterprise in the country.

**SPEAKER_2** (3:09)
Yeah, but you have to look at the extreme artificial scarcity engineered into this offering.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:14)
Right, because only roughly 4-5% of the company was actually floated for public trading.

**SPEAKER_2** (3:19)
Exactly, 4-5%, while Elon Musk retained overwhelming voting control.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:24)
Like over 80% via those super voting shares.

**SPEAKER_2** (3:27)
Right, so you have almost no float.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:29)
Yeah.

**SPEAKER_2** (3:29)
And that creates this insane retail frenzy. Retail investors accounted for over half of all retail equity buying across the entire stock market on the debut day.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:39)
Which is just, I mean, that's almost hard to comprehend. And that mechanically squeezed the low float stock up to over $190.

**SPEAKER_2** (3:46)
Yeah.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:47)
Pushing the valuation past $2.5 trillion and briefly vaulting it past Amazon.

**SPEAKER_2** (3:52)
But then you had the severe correction that followed. The stock dropped nearly 50% from its peak.
Because independent analysts were looking at this and calling the initial price severely overvalued based on fundamental cash flows.

**SPEAKER_1** (4:06)
Right, but it wasn't just retail enthusiasm driving that initial surge, you know. A massive segment of the market was contractually forced to buy in regardless of the price.

**SPEAKER_2** (4:16)
Oh, right, the index funds.

**SPEAKER_1** (4:17)
Yeah, the major index providers totally split on how to handle the massive listing and it resulted in absolute chaos for passive capital. S&P Dow Jones maintained its strict rules requiring consecutive quarters of profitability.
