Alexis Korner, often called the father of British blues, first heard the music that would define his life inside a London air raid shelter during a German bombing run in the early 1940s, when someone played a record by pianist Jimmy Yancey.

Picture yourself in London, right in the early 1940s.

SPEAKER_2 (0:04)

Right in the thick of it.

SPEAKER_1 (0:05)

Yeah, exactly. The entire city is under the strict blackout. You are sitting in the terrifying, just suffocating dark of an underground shelter.

SPEAKER_2 (0:15)

Oh, that must have been awful.

SPEAKER_1 (0:16)

It really was. The wail of air raid sirens is cutting through the night, and a devastating German bombing run is happening right overhead. It is a moment of absolute visceral terror where, you know, the world feels like it is literally coming apart at the seams.

SPEAKER_2 (0:31)

The sheer physical vibration of those bombs hitting the pavement, I mean, it would settle deep into your bones. Most people in those shelters were just praying for the morning.

SPEAKER_1 (0:40)

Completely consumed by the chaos outside.

SPEAKER_2 (0:43)

Exactly. Just totally consumed.

SPEAKER_1 (0:44)

But amidst all that destruction, hiding in one of those shelters, there is a young boy experiencing something completely different. Like, the thing that ends up changing his life forever isn't the sound of the explosions rattling the walls.

SPEAKER_2 (0:57)

Wait, what is it then?

SPEAKER_1 (0:58)

It's the sound of a record playing inside the shelter with him. Specifically, someone has put on a track by a black American piano player named Jimmy Yancey.

SPEAKER_2 (1:08)

Think about the surreal contrast of that image. I mean, you have the ultimate theater of war pairing a city to shreds outside. Yeah. But inside, this kid is being completely transported, almost like insulated by the hypnotic rhythm of the blues.

SPEAKER_1 (1:22)

That one surreal moment in the dark sparks a lifelong obsession. It's an obsession that will eventually change the entire landscape of global rock and roll.

SPEAKER_2 (1:31)

It really did.

SPEAKER_1 (1:32)

Welcome to the deep dive.

Today, we are immersing ourselves in a single biographical source to explore the life of Alexis Korner. If you are deeply embedded in music history, you probably know him as the father of British blues.

SPEAKER_2 (1:46)

Or even if his name doesn't immediately ring a bell for you, you absolutely know the music of the artists he taught and mentored and just launched into the stratosphere.

SPEAKER_1 (1:54)

Okay, let's unpack this. Our mission today is to go far beyond just reading off a discography or a timeline.

SPEAKER_2 (2:00)

Right, we want the real story.

SPEAKER_1 (2:02)

Exactly. We want to understand the architect behind a massive musical revolution.

This is a man who mentored absolute global icons. We are talking about the founding members of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream.

SPEAKER_2 (2:17)

The absolute heavyweights.

SPEAKER_1 (2:18)

He built the launch pad for them, yet he rarely captured that same global stadium level spotlight for himself.

SPEAKER_2 (2:25)

That contradiction is what makes his story so incredibly compelling, honestly. Especially when you look at his origins. Well, totally. Because you have this figure who became the absolute epicenter of the British blues movement. Yeah. The guy who literally taught the British kids what this music was and how to play it. Yeah. Yet he had virtually zero connection to the American South where the blues was born.

SPEAKER_1 (2:45)

None whatsoever. It reads like a completely different genre of biography. Let's look at his actual starting point. So Alexis Korner was born in Paris in April of 1928 and his heritage was incredibly diverse.

SPEAKER_2 (2:56)

Super diverse.

SPEAKER_1 (2:57)

His father was an Austrian Jewish man and his mother had Greek, Turkish and Austrian roots.

SPEAKER_2 (3:02)

It is a deeply cosmopolitan, multicultural European tapestry. He's a child of the continent, not the Mississippi Delta.

SPEAKER_1 (3:11)

Right. His childhood was intensely nomadic. Before he even got to that air raid shelter in London in 1940, he had lived in France, Switzerland and North Africa.

SPEAKER_2 (3:20)

All over the place.

SPEAKER_1 (3:21)

And he wasn't traveling for leisure. He was a refugee, constantly uprooted, just fleeing the devastating advance of the Second World War across Europe.

SPEAKER_2 (3:29)

Right.

SPEAKER_1 (3:29)

So he arrives in the UK as this displaced, traumatized kid and then he hears that Jimmy Yancey record and he decides right then and there that dedicating his life to playing the blues is the only path forward.

SPEAKER_2 (3:42)

You really have to pause and digest the sheer improbability of that sequence of events.

SPEAKER_1 (3:47)

It makes me think of him as the ultimate cultural chameleon, which brings up a driving question for me. Here's where it gets really interesting.

How does a refugee kid with this deeply multicultural Mediterranean and European Jewish background, manage to take a distinctly American Delta born art form, right, and translate it into something entirely new for an island nation like Britain?
