Who's really calling the plays for Auburn Football when the going gets tough?

We've got to hear from Alex Golesh.

Welcome on into The Auburn Express, powered by The War Rapport. For a second time today, I'm your host, Mike G. Turn us on, turn us up. We'll always turn it out. I'm here solo on a Monday afternoon after talking with Alex Golesh at the daily, at the Monday press conference, the weekly press conference.

We're going to hear from Alex Golesh here in a second. And guys, he had some things to say. I got the first question. I got to ask him about play calling. Auburn had a slow start, but they got it going. And when they got it going, who was calling the plays? And then, let's hear what Alex Golesh had to say in response to my question.

Alex Golesh (3:21)

Michael, you want to start it off?

Mike Giddens (3:25)

Michael Giddens, Auburn Express TV. Coach, can you talk about play calling?

You guys got off to a slow start, obviously, but you seem to find some sort of rhythm in the second half to your offense. Did you insert yourself into the play calling at any point on Saturday? Or how did that process go between you and Joel Gordon when talking in game about how to get the offense going?

Alex Golesh (3:46)

Yeah, great question.

The play calling has always been a big time group effort. This goes back to when I was in the box calling plays. It's always been a group effort.

We talk in between every drive. We talk through the next drive. We talk through their downs. We talk through high red, low red goal line so that we're all on the same page and our players are on the same page.

I insert myself when I have a thought. KB inserts himself when he has a thought. Hoodie inserts himself when he has a thought. We all do. It's hard to insert yourself. I've been on the other end of it while somebody's trying to call plays. So if you're really confident about something, we certainly do. But Joel calls the plays and we all have input in between. Joel has a really good feel for the cue and what's going to get him comfortable. I have my opinions. I have portions of the game plan that I help with. But ultimately, you can't all be talking at the same time, and you certainly don't want multiple voices in the quarterback's helmet either. So, but it all comes back to me in the big picture of it on all three sides of it. We weren't good enough early in the game. We didn't get Byrum settled in. It took a second and it wasn't good enough. You know, that's what's crazy is you look at it and it's not crazy. It's just fact. Six drives where we picked up the first first down score touchdowns on five of them. So it's it's the ability to start a drive and we didn't do a good enough job. And it's not Joel and it's not Cody. It's not Cody. It's it's truly we didn't do collectively did not do a good enough job starting drives those first three and one of those was in the tight zone, which is inexcusable, but we just didn't do a good enough job. Like I said, my job is to fix it and we'll fix it.
