ALERT: Byrum Brown Is Holding the Ball TOO LONG | Auburn Podcast

The Auburn Express

September 23, 2026

Auburn football survived some of these problems against Baylor. Against Florida, those same problems became much harder to overcome. Start with Byrum Brown. Brown's athletic ability is obvious. He can escape the pocket and suddenly rip off a 20 or 30 yard run.

Yeah, East of my Afghans. Ashton looks better in SEC play.

SPEAKER_4 (3:14)

Because they played Alabama.

Ike Jones (3:15)

Because he played Alabama.

B Wil (3:17)

Okay. They played in SEC team last night.

Ike Jones (3:20)

He's been, I mean, he's been a mixed bag as well, but okay.

B Wil (3:26)

Okay.

Ike Jones (3:29)

Quinn McKenzie says it's mind-boggling how Brown can take off and scramble for 20 to 30 yards and then sit back and take a sack.

B Wil (3:37)

Someone's just not clicking there, man. And I don't know whether it's him or it's the coaching or the calls. But it just, it's clear that, you know, I said it and I think Nathan King kind of tweeted it, like right after I said something about it. But it was some to the effect of, I think it's safe to say at this point in the season that he holds onto the ball quite long.

You know, I guess it's a point to say that for two years in a row. Yeah. I will take you guys through it on the film review. If nothing's there, I think that you can still recognize that nothing's there faster and then take off running. Yeah. If it's not, but he's got maybe moved through his progressions faster. That's what I'll be interested to see in the film review. If he's not moving through his progressions fast enough. But it felt like when Florida wanted to get to Byrum, they could.

Like it was very easy to say.

Ike Jones (4:40)

That third down that you were talking about where they did the overload to the right left side of the offensive line. It was like when they needed to heat it up, Auburn didn't have an answer.

B Wil (4:49)

Yeah, I just felt like it looked to me when I said that, Ike, like this is going to be successful. Look, they're loading up on the left side. They're clearly coming after him. They did and they got to him. So when they wanted to, they did.

And, you know, whatever, again, I'm going to say it looked much better on the scoreboard, but it felt to me like whatever points Auburn scored in the second half, a lot of it, they conceded.
