Hello, and welcome to The Tennis Podcast, your mid-week tennis podcast to bring you up to date, mostly with what's happened so far in the Billie Jean King Cup finals, but we'll cover off some other stuff as well, including the double-breasted suits that the good and the great of men's tennis have been forced to wear for the Labour Cup photoshoot. Don't you worry, that is on our agenda. Before we get to any of that important stuff though, David, how has your week been?
David Law (0:44)
Great.
It's been great. Thanks.
Catherine Whitaker (0:50)
Tell us, tell us more, David.
David Law (0:53)
What you're trying to get at, Catherine, is a bit of a mishap had yesterday, isn't it? It is, yeah. Is that it?
Catherine Whitaker (0:59)
Yeah. Okay. Let's get straight in this. Let's just get it out of the way.
David Law (1:02)
So let's come clean.
Matt Roberts (1:03)
It's what the people want, David.
David Law (1:05)
Given it's been on Instagram already in pictorial form.
Catherine Whitaker (1:10)
I did ask permission for that, just to be clear.
David Law (1:13)
I mean, and I took the photos myself, so it's not as though I was shrinking away from it. But this story, I will warn my mother, is not something she's heard yet, and yet she's somewhat involved.
Catherine Whitaker (1:32)
And I keep a lot of my mishaps from my mom.
David Law (1:35)
Do you tell her about them in front of thousands on the podcast?
Catherine Whitaker (1:41)
She doesn't know about my big mishap in New York, put it that way.
David Law (1:45)
No?
Catherine Whitaker (1:45)
No.
David Law (1:46)
Right. Do you want to get into that?
Catherine Whitaker (1:48)
No, no, no. It's too delicate.
David Law (1:51)
Okay. Fine.
Catherine Whitaker (1:52)
Everyone survived.
It's fine. Onto your mishap, David.
David Law (1:56)
And I should say, mom, it's not that bad in the end.
Anyway, I went around to my mother's house yesterday to be a very, very good son and help out with some stuff. That stuff required me to bring my iPad and my laptop, my phone and spend an hour at the kitchen table and do various things, which I did. And then I took my mom to her weekly bowls.
And I did that and she asked me if I would post something for her while I was out. And if you've never been to England, if something is already got a stamp on it and is ready to go, you can put it in one of those big, tall, cylindrical red post boxes where you stick your letters. And one of the things she gave me was a brochure, a holiday brochure that she had got hold of about three years ago. And as they do, they then sent her one every single month thereafter. And she decided, don't want these anymore, don't want to go on these holidays. I'm going to return it to the sender. Could you put it in the post box with the rest of the stuff? Sure, mom. No problem. So I dropped her off the bowls, went over to the post box, put the letters in, put the brochure in. I did think at the time, crikey, that's quite a heavy brochure that, and it's quite hard. But anyway, I shoved it into the post box, just about fit.
Went home, spent a couple of hours at home, chatting away to you, trying to make you laugh about stuff, and then thought, oh, I better do the newsletter, better edit the newsletter. So, off I went to get my laptop, couldn't find my laptop. Went around my mom's, mom, I think I've left my laptop on your kitchen table. She said, oh, don't think so. She says, must be in your car. Okay, yes, that's a good idea. Must be in my car.
It's not in my car. Thinking, I'm trying to go through, I mean, I literally had it two hours ago. I couldn't have done anything with it. I'm thinking, have I put it in the post box? I'm thinking, no, I couldn't possibly, I've never done that before. I'm 53 I'd have done that by now if I was going to do that.
Catherine Whitaker (4:27)
No one's ever done that.
David Law (4:29)
No one's ever done that. I just kept going over my steps and I still couldn't find it. Then I suddenly thought, I think I've picked it up with all the other things and I've put it in the post box. So I went to the post box to find out that the emptying of it was going to be at 5 p.m., which was in a few hours' time. And so I thought, I'll intercept the postman at 4.45 and come clean and see if you'll save me.
