You may have heard me reference the idea of maniacs on a mission and how much that idea excites me. Well, David Senra is my favorite maniac on one of my favorite missions with his weekly crafting of the Founders Podcast. Through studying the lives of legends, he weaves together insights across history to distill ideas that you can use in your work.
Founders reveals tried and true tactics, battle tested by the world's icons and has David's infectious energy to accompany them. With well over 300 episodes, your heroes are surely in the lineup and his recent episode on Oprah is particularly great. Founders is a movement that you don't want to miss. It's part of the Colossus Network and you can find your way to David's great podcast in the show notes.

My guest today is Adam Sandow. Adam is the Chairman and CEO of Sandow Companies and the Executive Chairman and Founder of Material Bank.
He has built an entire ecosystem of businesses and brands that has brought him into the game of media, materials and beyond. From creating the beauty product subscription model to getting magazines in the hands of billionaires to transforming the design industry with overnight access to samples, when Adam starts a business, he writes his own rule book. We discuss the founding stories of his most interesting companies, his obsession with targeting pain points and his philosophies for when to go all in and betting on himself. Please enjoy this great discussion with Adam Sandow.
So Adam, I'm really excited to introduce the audience to one of the more interesting business ecosystems, yours, that I've encountered in a number of years. And I thought a fun way to introduce what you do is to say at the start that you have found a way to kick ass in a business, partially in a business that I think most people would say is not a good business, which is magazines. So maybe you could describe a little bit about what you've built and how you've done it, especially given that you've done it in such a unique way in a place that I don't think a lot of, you know, VCs were return seeking capital controlling investors or seeking out, you know, buying up all these magazines, but you've done an incredible job. And I know there's a lot more to your ecosystem than just that which we'll get into, but I thought it would be an interesting wedge to start the conversation because I haven't encountered anything like it before.

Yeah, Patrick, thanks. I definitely have a bit of a unique path. Look, I've been an entrepreneur my entire life. In high school, I was an entrepreneur. As a freshman in college, I think I had 12 employees and I was an entrepreneur. It's in my blood.
About 22 years ago, when I started this company, I had a love of media and I started in the magazine business. Prior, I had built custom publishing companies. I had built media companies.
