The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

September 26, 2026

Is there a miscommunication between the manager and the captain? C-Mac has some strong thoughts on Judge's approach to his own injury updates, if he should try to push it and play against Boston, and whether the Yankees would be better off without Judge at less than 100 percent.

Big Mac, McMonigle, go get'em, buddy.

Now, here's Chris McMonigle.

And Go Get'Em We Shall. Welcome to the Go Get'Em Podcast with me, your host, Chris McMonigle. As the Yankees win the fourth game of the four game set, they take three out of four. But does that really matter as they lost the division Thursday night in the second game of the double header? Not Thursday night. Not Thursday night, Tuesday night. Tuesday night, they lost the second game of the double header, lost the division. We watched the Rays celebrate at Yankee Stadium. So really, the rest of the series meant absolutely nothing, including tonight's victory. And it's hard to take anything that you get from the series too seriously outside of Rodon's start. And maybe Lombard, who had a really good series, a really good game, had a really good slide, an RBI double, and then the bomb of a home run. And, you know, it's funny because we talk so much about Lombard and how important his defense is, right? And that's whatever you get offensively is just a bonus. And his defense is what's going to be what makes him worthy of playing him every day, his defense at shortstop. And while he made the error the other night, but it's been much better than the six game stretch of errors. And I still see brilliant plays from time to time. The Yankees have become so much better turning double plays since he's been a part of the team. And really, let's be fair, without Volpi at shortstop, even with Caviar at the beginning of the year, they were better at turning the double play. But he's got arm strength. So the tools are there. But offensively, he was having the same trajectory that Anthony Volpi had that, and I'm not to compare him to Anthony Volpi because we all hope he's better than Anthony Volpi offensively. But maybe Judge had, some other guys had, where it took him a while at that next level. And then once he got comfortable at that next level, he really started to hit. That's what happened with him in AA, took some time, then he started to rake there. AAA took some time, started to rake there. And what you're seeing now is, like, he's got power, like legit power. The home run tonight is a bomb.

The home run in Minnesota, right? Was it Minnesota or am I, not Minnesota. What was the last series they played? He had a bomb of a home run against- Arizona. Arizona. Thank you. A bomb of a home run in Arizona. Like he's, he's really shown some power.

Uh, and he's on a heater, man. And if he can provide anything, especially as now I didn't, uh, again, I just get home. I'm watching the game a little bit. I saw that the Red Sox were tied 5-5.

The Red Sox ended up.

SPEAKER_2 (3:15)

They, they lost, I believe. Their magic number still won.

Chris McMonigle (3:19)

Okay.

SPEAKER_2 (3:20)

So if they lose out and the White Sox win out, we've got a different opponent.

Chris McMonigle (3:27)

So yeah, the, um, the Red Sox lost. So we assume it's going to be the Red Sox, my point, but there is a chance where it could still be. I think the White Sox or the Guardians, but anyway, there's a chance it's someone else, which I think we would all, you know, be friggin thrilled if they avoided the Red Sox somehow and were able to take on either Cleveland or Chicago. But again, I don't even know the exactual, like the, how that would work because it's pointless to even try and dig up on it, but anything's possible.

But assuming it's the Red Sox, against all this left-handed pitching, I mean, if Lombard is a right-handed hitter can become anything here, and just riot a heater, it doesn't have to be great. Remember, Anthony Volpe had an 800 OPS in the 24 postseason. He doesn't have to be great, and he doesn't have to become the next great hitter forever, right through this heater, and maybe he's a little young to realize the magnitude of being the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees with half a season under his belt. But really impressive from him, and then Carlos Rodon pitched really well. We'll get to all of this as we get through the really good stuff here because the series, unfortunately, wasn't that important. I don't even think we're going to waste our time doing a shill and shame of the series.

Once they lost the second game of that double header, it really didn't mean anything.
