First, we're gonna be in Psalm 37 this morning, a Psalm of David.
And I've gone through this Psalm before in a Sunday School series a number of years ago, but we've just been doing a couple of the Psalms of David. We did Psalm 56, Psalm 34
So that's just the sound system with the computer. Hopefully it doesn't pop anymore. If it does, we'll mute it and et cetera, all right? But Psalm 34, Psalm 56 was written very early in David's life. So Psalm 56, he's running from Saul at the beginning of his life. He's hiding in Gath and then Psalm 34, he sees God deliver him and he's saying, Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord and he's rejoicing in what God has done in his life. Psalm 37, we're not going to read the entire Psalm this morning, but one of the verses, Psalm, verse number 25 says, I am young, I have been young and now I'm old. Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken nor seed breaking bread. So we know this is the Psalm of David. And from what David writes on the inspiration of scripture, we can understand this. David's writing Psalm 37 from the other end of his life. He's writing it as an older man from a different perspective. And he's looking back on his life and he's giving wisdom. He is teaching us from his unique perspective, both from God, what God is giving him, and from the perspective of his life. He's teaching us about serving God and trusting God. So verse number one of Psalm 37 David, under the inspiration of God, he writes this, fret not thyself because of evildoers. Neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity, for they shall soon be cut down like the grass and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good. So shalt thou dwell in the land and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light and thy judgment as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him. Fret not thyself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger and forsake wrath. Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil, for evildoers shall be cut off, but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, when the wicked shall not be, yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him, for he seeth that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn out the sword, and bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to slay such as be of an upright conversation. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholdeth the righteous. The Lord knoweth the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied, but the wicked shall perish. And the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs. They shall consume into the smoke, they shall consume away. The wicked borroweth and payeth not again, but the righteous showeth mercy and giveth. For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth, and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off. And so we'll stop our reading there, and we're going to consider the first part of the Psalm this Sunday. Lord willing, next Sunday, we'll come back and we'll catch the rest of it. But here, I've given it this title, as David is an older, David's older giving wisdom, A Sage's Instruction For Life. Okay, so here's David as a older man teaching wisdom. He says, let me teach you how to look at life from God's perspective. Let's pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you this morning. Lord I just pray. Lord, I need your help in communicating your word. Lord, I pray that you would give us encouragement, that you'd give us warning, that you'd give us help from your word this morning. Lord, I need your help. Lord, I pray for your grace, your power to be at work. I pray that you teach us exactly what we need to hear. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.
