The demand for energy has just been increasing and the supply of where this can come from has been decreasing. We've sort of zeroed in on uranium or something. There's a need for it, a big need for base load power, which renewables can't necessarily address. Each of these reactors costs billions and billions of dollars to commission. The world is short uranium and if we don't bring on NexGen's project, there's not enough uranium in the world to supply all these reactors.

What's better than an investment that goes up 20 times in price? An investment that goes up more than 20 times in price. You're going to hear about one of those exact investments on this episode of the Australian Investors Podcast featuring someone who I think is one of the lesser known but hidden gems in the Australian investments industry. I'm talking about Dean Price from Washington H. Soul Pattinson.

In this episode, Dean walks us through two companies that he backed with conviction many years ago and he tells us how it played out. What makes this conversation unique is Dean looks at companies not just from the share market perspective. He also looks at it from the perspective of offering financing arrangements, debt or convertible notes. If you don't know what those are, we'll talk a little bit about them today. But here's the general gist. Imagine you're sitting in Dean's shoes and two great companies come across your desk and they're in need of financial support.

They've got long-term thematics. The wind is blowing at their back and the business is right for scaling. You're going to discover what process Dean goes through and how he looks at these businesses and why he's still excited about the future of them in this episode of the Australian Investors Podcast.

Hey there, here's a quick note. This podcast contains general financial information only. That means it's not specific to you, your needs, goals or financial objectives. So don't act on the information until you've spoken to your financial planner. You'll find our full disclosure, disclaimer, and link to our financial services guide in the show notes. Dean, welcome back.

Dean Price (2:56)

Thanks for having me.

Owen Raszkiewicz (2:57)

It's good to have you in Melbourne. Last time we did it, we were in Sydney, and there was a lot of banter between the three of us in the studio. So I'm grateful that we get to do this in person and just one-on-one. Today, we're going to talk about two companies that you have very deep knowledge of and Soul Patts as a business has experienced over many years following, investing and supporting in different ways. And we're going to tease some of those things out.

But maybe just to keep things off for folks that haven't heard the first conversation that we had, can you just tell us a little bit about when did you join Soul Patts and what does your role look like today?

Dean Price (3:37)

I joined the company 18 years ago now, which is-

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:40)

So you're one of the fresh ones.

Dean Price (3:42)

A long time ago, yeah. So 18 years ago, my role today is Managing Director for the Principal Investment Team, Team Leader there, and also run the credit portfolio and the emerging companies portfolio.

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:54)

Which are probably, if I dare say so, if the rest of the Soul Patts team watch this back, that's the exciting part of the business.

Dean Price (4:01)

I think so.

Owen Raszkiewicz (4:03)

We've got emerging companies, which who doesn't love that, because you get to support these businesses as they scale.
