Somebody who has proper appetite signaling, when you consume a meal, you should feel full and you shouldn't be, you shouldn't have cravings for more food or whatever. And same thing for when you have elevated ketones, that's your body should be able to recognize that, okay, I have energy source for my brain, I don't necessarily need food, I'm not going to stimulate hunger. But when you break it down to its core, it's the food that you're putting in your body. If you're putting low quality foods in your body, or you're putting foods that are highly processed, or they're inflammation promoting, then you're not going to see the changes in your health that you want to see, or at least not as robust as you could be.

Welcome to the Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm your host Siim Land, and our guest today is Chris Irving. Chris is a nutrition researcher and the education manager at Perfect Keto. And he's known on social media as The Ketologist. He also has a master's degree in exercise and nutrition science.

Chris, welcome to the show.

Chris Irvin (1:07)

Hey, thanks for having me. Very excited to be on today.

Siim Land (1:10)

Yeah, and we're actually doing this post Christmas, so to say, and we're kind of enjoying the last moments of 2018 So to say, how has the 2018 been so far for you?

Chris Irvin (1:23)

Oh, it's been a whirlwind, man. It's so many life changes have happened this year.

Just, you know, beginning of the year, I was kind of in a completely different career doing different things. And now, as you mentioned, I'm doing the education manager for Perfect Keto, which has been just an awesome opportunity because, you know, it's getting to focus on the things I love to do so much, just researching, writing, educating, all the stuff that I really enjoy doing. So, you know, at the beginning of the year, I think I was kind of caught in a trap where I was doing more things that I didn't enjoy doing compared to now. So the last half of this year has been just a really incredible opportunity.

Siim Land (2:02)

Nice. So like you're doing mostly like research on science and kind of composing it together into the blog or something like that?

Chris Irvin (2:12)

Yeah, yeah. So I do kind of a lot of different things. One of the things is like a lot of product education. So just, you know, teaching people how to, whether it's internally within the company or externally teaching them how to use the products, the best uses of the products, timing, you know, what's the science behind it? And then just, you know, keeping up on new keto research in general, you know, whenever new studies are coming out, trying to be on top of breaking them down, finding the good ones, kind of relaying the bad ones to everybody.

So, you know, that's kind of the big thing is just being able to sit down and read through research. And at the beginning of this year, I was doing a lot more, you know, marketing stuff and more business related stuff that was kind of pulling away from my ability to like read research. And one of the things I always tell people is like with research, I feel like if you don't use it, you definitely lose it.

And if you're, you know, if you go six months, eight months without reading much research, you definitely aren't as sharp and you're not as up to date with the stuff. And research changes very quickly. New stuff's coming out all the time. So now I'm able to really stay on top of things and, you know, catch all the new stuff when it's coming out and break it down. And it's been a lot of fun.

Siim Land (3:22)

Yeah, it is so to say that science is progressing very rapidly and you do, you do have to kind of go out of your own way and really keep yourself up to date with all these new studies that are coming out all the time. But what are some of the studies that you're maybe most excited about that have come out recently?

Chris Irvin (3:44)

Yeah, I think the most recent study that I was really excited about was a study that I'm drawing a blank on the university that it came out of. But there was a recent study that came out that was a super practical study where they took just general population, put them on a ketogenic diet for, I believe it was eight weeks.
