937b wwgd: her husband's super is low and he's turning 60 in four years
money money money
September 16, 2026
Kushla's husband Greg spent a decade as a stay-at-home dad before running his own business, and the combination has left his super well behind for his age. Now at 56 with four years until he turns 60, Kushla wants to know: should they be smashing the mortgage or his super?

Welcome to another episode of What Would Glen Do, where you, the listeners, apply to be on the show. And if I think it's a conversation worth having, or if it's not too over the top complex, some of you apply and there's like 28 paragraphs of questions, and you just need full financial advice. And this ain't for you because it's more of an infotainment show. But the ones that I think we can all learn from and have a good chat with and a bit of fun, I'll invite on the show.
If you are new to watching or listening to What Would Glen Do? This is exactly that. What would Glen do? My name's Glen. My ugly mug is on the cover of the podcast and the YouTube. So if you disagree with me after you're hearing what I'm saying to somebody what I would do, that's totally fine because it's not what every listener in the world should do.
It's what I would do. And we'll have a bit of fun along the way. And I love doing these episodes. Today, I'm joined by Kushla. She is beaming in from Queensland up in the North. Welcome to What Would Glen Do? Kushla.
Kushla (1:13)
Hi, thanks for having me.
Glen James (1:15)
My pleasure. Now, is that like Polish or something?
Kushla (1:19)
It's Irish or Indian or German, but I'm from New Zealand. Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah.
Glen James (1:25)
Done a bit of a lap, have we?
Kushla (1:26)
Yeah.
Glen James (1:27)
Good stuff. Well, what do you want to know what I would do?
Kushla (1:33)
Okay. Well, my question is, so my husband and I were 11 years apart. He's 11 years older than me. And his super is quite low for his age.
And so he's turning 60 in four years. And I guess what my focus is, is should we be putting more money into his super and less focus on the mortgage or flip it around the other way?
So yeah, that's my what will Glen do question.
Glen James (2:07)
Yeah. Interesting. Interesting. Well, I've got lots of questions. Again, if it is your first time joining us, I'll spend some time and clarify a whole heap of just data stuff. Then I will maybe clarify a couple of questions after we've got the data on the table. Then I'll issue my decree with what I would do in someone's situation. And sometimes I don't even know. And we get to this place where it's like, I don't know. But we're going to do it right now. My name is Glen James and this is What Would Glen Do?
Before we get into it, this show is general advice only. I've got a license to provide that advice. Full details can be found in the show description. My name is Glen James, former Financial Advisor. I host this show and a show called Retire Right. I've got some books, the award winning Quick-Start Guide to Investing and the Quick-Start Guide to Your First Property available where good books are sold or in the description. If you're new here, welcome. If you're in old hand, welcome to M3. Let's get into it right now.

Kushla (4:02)
Eight shifts a fortnight, sorry.
Glen James (4:04)
I was going to say, is there any other jobs going on there?
OK. So eight shifts a fortnight. Is that eight days a fortnight?
Kushla (4:14)
Yeah. Yeah.
Glen James (4:15)

Kushla (4:48)
