What's up everybody? Welcome to another episode of Yah Lah. Your thrice weekly podcast where we talk about the hottest news with a touch of what, Terence?
Terence (0:54)
Good old humor.
SPEAKER_2 (0:55)
Good old humor, man. Start of the week. How was the weekend, man?
Terence (1:00)
I did not go to the weekend concert, if that's what you're asking.
SPEAKER_2 (1:03)
I think half of Singapore was there.
Terence (1:04)
I wasn't, but sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's either people were there at the weekend concert or at Ju Chiat Lah. Car Free Day, which you attended.
SPEAKER_2 (1:11)
Yeah, yeah.
Terence (1:13)
How was that, that Car Free Day?
SPEAKER_2 (1:15)
I mean, it was great lah. Because I saw it the night, at first, the night before, I saw that they were blocking out these parking, by the road parking spots.
Then I saw a sign, oh, it's going to be closed from 8am to 2am the next day. So in the morning, my wife and our kid, during our long walk, we walked past, they were setting up and we were like, hey, this looks pretty cool lah. It was, you know, can walk through and all. So we went back at 6pm.
Terence (1:38)
Yeah.
SPEAKER_2 (1:38)
And it was a mad house. Yeah. Like I had to queue up to cross the road. And I heard people in the queue saying, oh, this is like Shibuya Crossing.
It had that vibe lah, but it was packed. And we brought our kid in a stroller lah.
Terence (1:51)
Yeah.
SPEAKER_2 (1:51)
So we were navigating through the crowd. I mean, thankfully, my kid was totally fine. But yeah, it was a very vibrant.
Terence (1:57)
So good or bad?
SPEAKER_2 (1:58)
I think it's great.
Terence (2:00)
Sounds mainly like a lot of complaints about the crowd.
SPEAKER_2 (2:02)
No complaints. No complaints. It was just factual first, Terence. No complaints. I think it's a great initiative. I'm damn happy it happened.
And I think there needs to be more of that. And it's like the first time Jiu-Jitsu has been closed for to be car free.
Terence (2:14)
Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_2 (2:15)
I think it was great.
Terence (2:16)
And it's all the local businesses lah.
SPEAKER_2 (2:19)
I don't know where the local businesses, the businesses along that stretch.
And I mean, I can imagine it was great for them. And I was just damn happy. I saw that, I was like, this just gives me hope for Singapore, the scene for small businesses and all.
Terence (2:34)
Yeah.
SPEAKER_2 (2:34)
Yeah. Yeah.
Terence (2:36)
Who closed it? Like what? Was it a... Because it takes a lot. It's quite a gung-gen-gen effort to close certain roads.
SPEAKER_2 (2:43)
Yeah. I mean, I bumped into Goh Pei Ming from the Marine Parade GRC. I mean, he was walking with a spring in his step, damn happy. And yeah, I told him, this is awesome. He said, he's just very happy. This was in the morning.
And so I'm assuming that it had to go through the GRC and the MPs. Because you remember like long time ago, we took part in Parking Day, along Amoy Street back in 2015 or 2016
Terence (3:11)
That one, the roads were not closed, per se, right?
SPEAKER_2 (3:13)
It wasn't.
Terence (3:14)
I don't think so. They just opened up the parking space for people to come by. But the roads were still open.
SPEAKER_2 (3:19)
Oh, the roads.
Terence (3:19)
Correct.
SPEAKER_2 (3:20)
Parking Day. But this past Saturday was World Car Free Day.
Terence (3:23)
Ah, yes.
SPEAKER_2 (3:23)
Yeah. So I mean, it was like what you said, gargantuan effort and I think managing, because there are people who live along those roads as well. And the Dunmun Road and East Coast Road were packed, but I think it's a small price to pay. And I think if more of this happens over time, then there's less of like, oh, we need to go because this is not going to happen again.
