All righty, folks. One of the things I love to do is something I call portfolio reviews, where we meet a new investor, we go through their portfolio, where they're at, what they're doing, and then we talk about what's next, where should they go? Questions, traps, things of that nature.
I was lucky enough to meet Tomas at Bigger Pockets. He was one of the photographers running around documenting an amazing event. He made sure to take care of me, so now I'm going to take care of him. Tomas, how are you doing, buddy? Thanks for all your help.
Tomas Marquez (1:23)
Real good. Good to see you again, honestly. And I appreciate you recognizing that, honestly. And I'm going to be really upfront. I wasn't even supposed to be in your seminar. I was supposed to be covering another room. But I was like, you know what? I'm not going to not miss it. You get what I mean? And life is all about making those opportunities at the end of the day. And when I first ran into you at Bigger Pockets, I was on the way up to my room to go grab a different lens for my camera. And it just, life happens that way. You know what I mean? So yeah, it was an amazing event, and it was last minute for me. I reached out to them completely last minute, offered my time and my photography skills, and they let me in completely for free. And it was great. And that's just kind of the thing you said. What do you have to offer to the community, essentially?
Michael Zuber (2:13)
There you go.
Tomas, since we both were at Bigger Pockets, I know you were running around working. I was there. Why don't we talk about Bigger Pockets first, maybe for three to five minutes, and then we'll get into your portfolio, and probably the most important part, the questions after that. But let's go back and forth. We'll do three takeaways from the event each, so it'll be six. You go first, I'll go next. So what was one of your big takeaways?
Tomas Marquez (2:42)
The biggest one for me is harping on patience, for me, because I think a lot of people have a problem with patience, and I do have that problem. I want to get to the end so quickly, and I have no reason why to get there.
I remember Dave Meyer saying, we have this fixed number of properties or this idea of properties that we want to get to, and once we reach it, we're not going to find happiness.
If this is what makes us happy, let's just keep doing this. There's no number, essentially. And the number to me is just financially. Whatever I can get into, whatever deal makes sense, what you say, if I can do one deal a year, and it makes sense, and I killed on that deal, then that's really all that matters. And it's about patience. It's just all those, just staying consistent and whatnot, and just being patient. And it doesn't come to you. You seek it, and then it's there. You find it.
Michael Zuber (3:42)
So my first one, again, this is fun to riff on. I'll go to Dave Meyer as well. Dave Meyer kicked off day two. He was the keynote of day two in the morning. And he put up a slide talking about build to last and build to leave.
I've joked that he misspelled fail. I remember you saying. Yeah.
But again, maybe build to leave was the right answer because again, Dave's much nicer than I am. But the takeaway for me is, we've seen a lot of people quit real estate. It's funny that Bigger Pockets was the weekend that Ryan Pineda quit real estate, and he quit coaching, and he's doing these other things. We've seen Graham Stephan selling his portfolio in LA, and we've seen Airbnb blow up. We've seen syndicators blow up. We've even seen Bigger Pockets past legends blow up. And to me, it's just a sign that, you know, for, you know, what do you want to call it, an eight- or a ten-year run, it was easy.
