What's going on, everybody? It's episode 589 of The Genius Life. Let's rock.
The Genius Life.
What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to The Genius Life. I'm your host, Max Lugavere. And today's episode is all about to take control of your health in a world where wellness itself has gotten a little out of control. My guest is Dr. Lucy McBride. She's a Harvard-trained internal medicine physician and author of the new book, Beyond the Prescription. Today we talk about why modern medicine so often fails to treat the whole person, how the wellness industry has stepped into that void with an endless stream of protocols, gurus, supplements, and optimization, and how to become the CEO of your own health without becoming your own doctor or obsessing over every single biomarker.
We also get into GLP-1 drugs, peptides, menopause, and the difference between actually improving your health and simply doing more. Now, quick note before we jump in, if you haven't yet read my new perspective in Missouri Medicine, I highly recommend you check it out. It's titled A Food First Prescription for Cognitive Longevity, and it's now live and open access on PubMed. In it, I make the case that a meaningful share of dementia risk may be modifiable and lay out a practical food first framework for supporting brain health and cognitive longevity through nutrition. Head over to my Instagram or X page. It is currently pinned to the top on both platforms. Now, if you enjoyed this episode of the show, please consider sharing it with friends and loved ones who might benefit and leave a rating and review on your podcast app of choice. And make sure that you're following or subscribed wherever you listen, including on YouTube. And if you're not already signed up for my free weekly newsletter, head over to maxlugavere.com/newsletter and make it so. Every week, I share research breakdowns, practical health tips and other useful stuff to help you live better. No spam, just value. Now with all that out of the way, let's dive in. Here's episode 589 Let's go. Dr. Lucy McBride, welcome to the show. How are you doing?
Lucy McBride (2:03)
I'm great. Max, thanks for having me.
Max Lugavere (2:05)
So good to have you all the way from DC, which is a city I love when the weather's nice.
So thanks for coming out. Thanks for helping us unpack how to take charge of your health today, which I think is such an important conversation. And I think like, maybe you'll agree with me, maybe you don't, but at least from my non-medical doctor vantage point, we have tools today, we have like unprecedented access to tools which make this, I think there are fewer excuses than ever to not take control of your health. So thanks for putting this together.
Lucy McBride (2:36)
So glad to be here. I can't wait to tell you about this book.
It's really for anybody who's disillusioned with the medical system, where you have maybe 15 minutes at max with your doctor. And through no fault of your doctor, you're kind of hurried through the visit. You're treated like a bag of organs, a set of symptoms, and the visit feels transactional.
They don't have time to ask you how you are in your real life. Like, what's going on? Medicine excels at fighting diseases, but is pretty terrible at helping people live their lives. So then, no surprise, people go to the wellness industry for medical advice. They want to be well, and I want patients to be well. But where the medical system is often prescriptive, so can the wellness industry, with protocols and plunges and prescriptive advice. That, you know, isn't necessarily wrong, it's just it doesn't necessarily tailor to your needs. There's a lot of solutioning, a lot of prescription being given out, without asking the right questions first. So this book is designed to help people ask better questions of themselves, and then of the people responsible for their care, whether it's your doctor or a wellness influencer.
Max Lugavere (4:03)
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. I think it's, I think it's important for people to remember, you know, like context is pretty important, I think, most of the time, all of the time.
Lucy McBride (4:17)
All of the time.
Max Lugavere (4:19)
And the wellness industry wasn't created in a vacuum. Like, it was created, it is what it is as a response to the way that many people feel that they've been treated in the industrial healthcare complex.
Lucy McBride (4:36)
100%. It's a direct reaction to the unmet needs people have, given that 100 million Americans, probably more at this point, don't have access to a primary care doctor. So if you don't have a doctor, or if you do, you have five minutes with that person, and you have a complaint today, but they can't see you over three months. Like, what are you going to do in 2026? You go online. You look for answers.
