Happy summer. It's episode 585 of The Genius Life. Let's rock.
The Genius Life.
What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to The Genius Life. I'm your host, Max Lugavere. I hope you're having a great summer. I'm recording this from Vegas with my family, where we are absolutely sweltering, but otherwise having a great time. Today's guest on the show is Dr. Dave Rabin. He's a board certified psychiatrist, neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and author of the brand new book, A Simple Guide to Being Alive. In this episode, we talk about anxiety, not as something to suppress, but as information from the body, information worth listening to. Dave explains why safety is central to healing, learning, recovery, and performance. And we talk about why modern life may be overwhelming our nervous systems with more stimulation than we're built to handle. We get into trauma, stress resilience, psychedelic-assisted therapy, ketamine, MDMA, breathwork, technology, human connection, and simple ways to shift your state in real time. This is a super thoughtful conversation about what it means to feel safe in your body and more alive in your life. So listen through all the way to the end. And as per usual, don't forget to share this episode with friends and loved ones that you think may benefit from it. And now with all that out of the way, here's episode 585 with Dr. Dave Rabin. Let's rock. Dr. Dave Rabin, welcome back to the show. How are you doing?
Dave Rabin (2:32)
Great. So good to see you.
Max Lugavere (2:34)
Mazel tov on your first book, brother, A Simple Guide to Being Alive. It's a beautiful cover. We were talking before we got started rolling on the biblical undertones of the cover. What were you trying to achieve with the cover design?
Dave Rabin (2:49)
So the cover is a modern 21st century Adam and Eve locked outside the Garden of Eden with many different ways to get in and a lock that is breathing and a key that is clearly there, but we're missing it. And it really comes from, I think, this concept that I learned, that I know many of us learned growing up about this creation story and how we got kicked out of the Garden of Eden because we disobeyed God. And that was a core lesson, at least, I learned from that story and was taught. I think most of us learned a similar story, generally speaking. And that just never really seemed like the whole story to me. And so over the years, as I was studying neuroscience and psychology and mental health, trauma, PTSD, psychedelics, these biblical spiritual overtones kept coming through.
And these themes that reminded me back of that story. And so that story is woven throughout the book. And I think, as almost like the Bible, thinking of the Bible like a puzzle, rather than something that we're supposed to interpret word for word, it's like a puzzle. We're supposed to figure out how to put the pieces together to extract the most meaning, so that we can understand how to live good, healthy, happy, long lives, right? Like, that's kind of the purpose of that book, right? And when you think about it from a, like, why else would it exist for so long?
Max Lugavere (4:13)
Of course, yeah. I just want to know how many psychedelics you had to do to arrive at this idea.
Dave Rabin (4:20)
Well, the short answer is not many because it was really, I mean, I think the, I don't think you have to do any psychedelics really to get here. If you have, if you just ask the right questions, and I know Elon Musk was talking about this recently, about how important it is to ask the right questions, and I think that is something that most of us just aren't taught.
