You're only cheating yourself, like you're not cheating the employer. If you're not working hard, it's affecting you and no one else.

Megha (0:06)

Especially if you're in America and you grew up with like American parents who, you know, fed you snacks, or you went to school and birthday parties, then it's really difficult to just go cold turkey off of sugar. It's an addiction. You're ostracized for just eating.

Matt (0:18)

Eating real food.

Megha (0:19)

Yeah. Once you kind of figure out that, you know, you are your best friend, your biggest critic, and you should care more about yourself than really anyone, be a little selfish, then it's easier to get through life.

Matt (0:30)

We now have a successful business. We're self-employed, you know, two years, three years after starting Keto, two years after starting the business.

Is it just coincidence or is it because I started Keto that I actually made all these dramatic life changes?

Siim Land (0:44)

Body, mind, empowerment.

Welcome to the Body, Mind, Empowerment Podcast. I'm your host Siim Land and our guests are Matt and Megha from ketoconnect.com. They run one of the biggest online websites about the ketogenic diet and they're very popular on social media for creating these healthy, low-carb ketogenic recipes that are almost too good to be true.

I'm glad that you could make it to the show guys and I'm definitely glad to have you here.

Matt (1:24)

Thanks so much for having us. Actually though, it's ketoconnect.net.

We were dumb when we first started. We wanted to save like $3 per month. We went for.net instead of.com.

Siim Land (1:35)

Okay, well, it was my cognitive bias kind of predicting that its.com but we'll change it. So let's start talking about what made you start the Keto diet and what's your journey been like so far?

Megha (1:51)

So this is just the diet.

So Matt and I have always been very health conscious. We've tried a bunch of different diets. We've both been vegetarians. We've done low carb, really everything under the sun. I've done like slim fast diet, a lot of protein bars, everything.

So when Matt and I first started dating, he was a vegetarian and I was just doing low fat at the time, but he found the Keto Diet on Reddit and then he had also seen that sugar film, a documentary on Netflix, and it really prompted him to think about the way sugar impacts us day to day and maybe cutting out all the sugar we eat, orange juice, yogurt, cereal in the morning could really have a positive impact. So we kind of just started on a whim and cutting out sugar, I mean, we did a cold turkey, which I think worked well for us. Not a lot of people can handle cold turkey at first, but-

Matt (2:44)

It was cold turkey, kind of, but we also ate a lot of like-

Megha (2:48)

Protein.

Matt (2:48)

Yeah, just like, the way I think most people started keto diet, you just do low carb first. That's like the first step. And we did like mostly Quest bars and just like foods like that. Like that's how we started the diet. And then now like, you know, that's why we make recipes the way we make them. Like we make a lot of replacement foods because I think that's the way that we started.

So I think there's a lot of people in our situation coming from just like a history of dieting.

You know, nothing's working. You can't really kick the sugar. It's kind of like a real true addiction. It's tough. So starting with just like replacing some foods is a good way to go. And that's how we did it.

Siim Land (3:24)

Yeah, the Reddit goldmine is definitely something you can find. There are many good things in there from time to time.

So fortunate.

Matt (3:32)

Yeah, I love Reddit. Yeah.

Siim Land (3:34)

Although, you know, at the same time, they can be, you know, quite a flame war as well. So that's true.

But how did you start your business and the website?

Matt (3:45)

Yeah, so for that, we were cooking a lot and making new recipes, like just kind of on our own in the kitchen, trying to make, you know, we wanted to make cake or something one night brownies, stuff like that. So we got the idea to start a food blog was the first thing we wanted to do. And we bought the domain, we bought an expensive camera, like 600 bucks. And that's what made us stick with it. So we had the $600 investment in the camera. So it's easy to like pick something up and then no one pays attention to it for a couple months. And then you just give up, because you know, you're doing all this work for nothing.
