**Georgia Hardstark** (0:57)
That's Georgia Hardstark.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:58)
Thank you. That's Karen Kilgariff.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:00)
You're welcome. And here, we are presenting you what we call a solo episode.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:06)
It's a gift to ourselves. That's right. Essentially.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:09)
That's right. We get to take a little break.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:11)
We record in advance. We do extra work in advance so that the future is brighter.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:16)
We've all sat by a pool and said, hey, isn't this nice?

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:19)
Yeah.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:20)
We want that in our lives.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:21)
That's right.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:22)
A pool or a stream.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:23)
A fucking running sink would be fine.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:25)
Just stand near the sink with your hands in the water. But you can't do that if you're podcasting, so we got to take a break.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:32)
That's right. You have to work before you relax.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:35)
That's right.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:35)
Says the patriarchy. And so.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:38)
And so do it.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:39)
No, we're the literal business owners.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:43)
We love this.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:44)
This is one thing we can't look and blame on the patriarchy. Unfortunately.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:48)
This is the Austriarchy.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:49)
Oh, I love that.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:51)
Let's end it.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:54)
The Austriarchy. I'm giving you pause.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:58)
Right?

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:59)
Three pointing back.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:01)
Three pointing back.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:03)
So sick of her.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:04)
God, if she would only shut up.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:07)
She just can't help herself. This week, it's me who can't help herself and can't shut the fuck up by telling you a solo story.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:15)
Let's see if I can shut the fuck up. I probably can't.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:18)
And listen, it can all be true crime all the time.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:20)
Explain yourself at no time to no person.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:23)
I'm doing it to us.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:25)
Oh, is this for the US hierarchy? Well, they say not good enough.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:30)
Yeah, actually, she does fucking say that.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:32)
She does, right? She's so tough.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:34)
She's so mean.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:36)
She talks a lot.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:37)
Yeah, it's because she's a little sister.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:38)
Yeah, that's right. No one listens.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:40)
So today I'm going to do a story about a sports legend.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:43)
Okay, great.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:44)
One of your favorite sports.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:46)
Oh, yeah?

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:46)
Baseball, who many would argue that this sports legend.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:51)
Babe Ruth?

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:52)
No. Wedged open the door for the Civil Rights Movement.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:55)
What?

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:56)
This is the story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Hell yeah. Do you know anything about it?

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:01)
You know what I'm talking about. Well, absolutely. I've definitely watched a lot of documentaries with my dad that I would not myself have otherwise chosen.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:09)
Yeah.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:10)
But then when I watch it, I'm like, I'm so glad I watched that.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:12)
It's because Ken Burns can do no wrong.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:14)
Yeah. Oh, right.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:16)
The main source of the story is the Ken Burns documentary, Jackie Robinson and the rest of the sources can be found in the show notes.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:22)
Incredible.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:23)
Jack Roosevelt Robinson is born January 31st, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia to Mallie and Jerry Robinson. Theodore Roosevelt had died earlier in the month that Jack is born. That's why his middle name is Roosevelt to attribute to Theodore Roosevelt.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:39)
That's weird to think that they existed right at the same. They like did a fold over.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:43)
Overlap, right.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:45)
That will be my last comment.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:47)
No, it won't and I'm glad. Jack is the youngest of five children and his father works as a sharecropper. At least two of Jack's grandparents had been enslaved. I looked it up in the year he's born, at least 21 African Americans are hanged in Georgia alone. So we're deep in it. It's 1919, things are not easy. There's so much more that I've left out of this just for time purposes. So definitely watch the Ken Burns documentary.
