Hello, and welcome to My Favorite Murder.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:19)
That's Georgia Hardstark.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:20)
That's Karen Kilgariff.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:21)
Adjust, adjust, adjust your microphone.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:23)
Here we are with our microphones.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:26)
Microphones are a big part of podcasting, ladies and gentlemen.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:29)
It's kind of the only part, really.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:31)
Yeah, they do more than we do.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:32)
Yeah, once you have a microphone, you're basically a professional podcaster.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:36)
You never give it up.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:37)
You never shut the fuck up.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:38)
You never can shut it down. Do you remember the way I used to shake the old microphones? Yes. Dang.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:44)
Do you remember when we were amateur podcasters?

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:46)
Do you remember when you were the sound guy, and Stephen was just a gleam in our eyes?

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:51)
I do. So this funny thing happened to me. This funny thing happened.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:54)
Okay.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:54)
I was reading this.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:55)
Are you doing bits?

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:55)
I'm doing bits.

**Georgia Hardstark** (0:56)
Yes.

**Karen Kilgariff** (0:57)
I'm listening to a book that I totally loved. It was great. It's one of the drinking alcoholics memoirs that I love so much, called Drinking a Love Story by Caroline Knapp. It's from the 90s, so I thought it'd be dated. No, it's life-changing.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:12)
Is this the one where there's a scene where she jumps on her boyfriend's back like that?

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:16)
I don't think so.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:17)
And they crash?

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:18)
She has her friend's children and she crashes like that.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:21)
Oh, her friend's children.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:22)
That's right. Yeah. It's so good. It's changed a lot of things. I haven't had a drink since I listened.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:26)
Are you serious? Yes.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:28)
It's been eight days. But the weird thing about the audiobook is that it's read by the same woman who read I'll Be Gone in the Dark.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:37)
No.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:39)
Her name is Gabra Zachman. She's a famous audiobook narrator. But I'm listening to this sobriety book and I'm expecting someone to break into the house in the middle of the night and murder everyone.

**Georgia Hardstark** (1:50)
It's just because you listen to I'll Be Gone in the Dark so many times.

**Karen Kilgariff** (1:54)
So many times. It's just really jarring and also I've ruined everything for myself with true crime, essentially.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:01)
I mean, it is what we do.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:02)
Yeah.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:03)
It's how it is. Yeah. I think that's so funny. That's like, I wonder if that person probably has the most insane range of books and it's like, oh, I can do more than just these two things.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:11)
Right.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:12)
But I remember that there was a couple of those, at the time, very groundbreaking kind of autobiography tell-alls about, here's how I got through this horrible thing. There was another one about eating disorders. It's so, I think no one recommends it anymore because it's so triggering.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:29)
Right.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:30)
It's basically someone giving you a training manual.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:32)
Right. Well, she has a lot of that in there. I mean, it's a woman, it doesn't seem like in the 90s that was discussed a lot. You have this idea of what an alcoholic is and it's not a professional smart woman from a good background.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:45)
Right.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:45)
It just shows that it could be anyone.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:47)
Yeah. That it builds and builds.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:49)
It sure does.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:50)
Grows and grows.

**Karen Kilgariff** (2:51)
The thought process behind it all is so familiar. I was almost laughing at myself about how obvious it is.

**Georgia Hardstark** (2:57)
But yeah, this is the way. Yeah.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:00)
Alcohol is an addictive substance.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:03)
Yeah, it is.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:03)
People get addicted to it.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:05)
Yeah. Because for a little while you get the slippy slide out of reality.

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:09)
So nice.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:10)
It's real nice. It reminds me of this morning. I could not get out of the shower because we're having a very strangely cold summer here in LA.
Today, well, I haven't been outside Georgia. I was like, it's freezing today. Did you spill?

**Karen Kilgariff** (3:22)
I have spilled all over my face.
Oh, and then I ripped my dress open. Oh, yes.

**Georgia Hardstark** (3:29)
