509 - The Christmas Tree

Middling with Eden and Brock

October 7, 2026

We're recapping episode 509, "The Christmas Tree" and Eden is gobsmacked that Brock has never heard "Cats in the Cradle." We're going behind the scenes on how specifically Eden had to sneeze and we've got plenty of Blue Bag Grab questions regarding Brick's Ponzi scheme!

Speakers Brock Ciarlelli, Eden Sher

TopicsTV & FilmComedy

Brock Ciarlelli (0:00)

It's like saying like... Have I heard it and I just don't know it? Because I will say even in reciting the lyrics, I'm like, yeah.

Eden Sher (0:08)

No, no, I think you might, if none of those...

Brock Ciarlelli (0:11)

Jog my memory, then I just haven't heard it. Okay.

Eden Sher (0:16)

Yeah, I think if you don't know, if this doesn't mean anything to you, they're like, Well, the cat's in the cradle in the silver moon, little boy blue in the man in the moon. When you're coming home, son, I don't know when, but we should get together then. Yeah, we should get together then. Nothing.

Brock Ciarlelli (0:34)

Blank. You've never heard it.

Eden Sher (0:35)

You've never heard it then. You'd know that.

SPEAKER_3 (0:36)

You would at least know that.

Eden Sher (0:38)

For sure.

Brock Ciarlelli (0:39)

Eden.

Eden Sher (0:40)

Brock.

Brock Ciarlelli (0:41)

Sue Sue Heck is allergic to Christmas, the Christmas Tree.

SPEAKER_3 (0:45)

According to her, it's allergic to Christmas.

Brock Ciarlelli (0:47)

It's allergic to Christmas. What is Eden Sher allergic to?

SPEAKER_3 (0:51)

Honestly, not actually.

Eden Sher (0:53)

That's a lot. I was gonna say not a lot. Dairy.

Brock Ciarlelli (0:56)

Sure. Pella dairy.

Eden Sher (0:57)

And I'm not lactose intolerant. For anyone who's like, well, there's lactate. No, no, no. I am not lactose intolerant. I am allergic to dairy. I have an allergic reaction. It's not that I don't have the thing that I can't, like, you know, people don't have the enzyme or whatever.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:09)

Yeah, so sexy. No, no, no.

Eden Sher (1:10)

I have an allergic reaction to dairy.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:12)

Oh, my God.

Eden Sher (1:13)

I know. It's whatever. It's fine.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:15)

Sue can never really experience real mac and cheese.

Eden Sher (1:19)

I can if I, you know, break my veganism and then I, if I do it and then I will just hack up mucus for hours.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:28)

So sexy.

Eden Sher (1:29)

I know, and have a heartburn. Yeah, it's disgusting.

Also a little bit cats.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:35)

Oh, okay. But I like my cats.

Eden Sher (1:36)

Yeah, yes.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:37)

I always forget you have cats. I know. I've met both, I think, at this point.

Eggbert and Dusty. Okay, I'm allergic to, I don't know if I still am, because sometimes you can outgrow allergies to horses. Because when I was in third grade, I sat on a horse and I broke out in hives.

SPEAKER_3 (1:55)

Oh my God.

Brock Ciarlelli (1:55)

In the following week, I had to go film a PBS commercial. Oh my God. Local for Denver.

SPEAKER_3 (2:00)

Oh my God.

Brock Ciarlelli (2:01)

My mom was like, Benadryl.

So then I got that prick test where you get like all the things on your back and I was allergic to horses. But that was in third grade. So I haven't been near a horse since third grade, so we'll find out. Wow. Yeah, I'm curious if I'm still allergic.

Eden Sher (2:18)

I wonder if it was something. Yeah, no. I wonder how are you allergic to it? Like what's it? Is it the dander? Is it something in the horse fur, hair? Because like how can you be allergic to an animal?

Brock Ciarlelli (2:28)

I'm going to give you the same reaction I did when you were saying Cats in the Cradle.

Oh, well. Eden, this is all to say. We're recapping episode 509, The Christmas Tree, and it's my favorite kind of episode. I love our guests, but it's just you and me.

Eden Sher (2:45)

Just you and me.

SPEAKER_3 (2:46)

Just the core two, baby.

Eden Sher (2:48)

All of that and so much more. So let's get to Middling.

Brock Ciarlelli (3:08)

Welcome to Middling with Eden and Brock, where Eden and I break down an episode of ABC's The Middle each and every week.

I'm going to tell you something and I'm going to tell the world so I can I have to stick to it. Yes. I'm locking in. Okay. Okay, so I'm going to...

Eden Sher (3:22)

This is your Jewish New Year resolution?

Brock Ciarlelli (3:23)

Yes, I'm locking.

SPEAKER_3 (3:25)

This is your Russian Shana resolution.

Eden Sher (3:26)

Exactly.

Brock Ciarlelli (3:28)

Exactly. I'm locking in with cooking more at home.

SPEAKER_3 (3:34)

Okay.

Brock Ciarlelli (3:35)

Going to the gym gym instead of just taking classes, actually going to the gym, lifting weights, doing progressive overloads, taking notes, figuring out when I can add more weights. Have I hit my max rep count? Sure. I'm locking in Eden. Okay. I have my whole workout routine. I've been doing it for two weeks at the gym. Wow. Haven't started cooking at home yet.
