Muriel's Murders

March 30, 2022

A serial killer who vacationed at the same time and place we vacationed - Puerto Vallarta! Muriel's Murders finally returns after we got stuck in Puerto Vallarta with a not-so-mild case of Covid.

Speakers Muriel Montgomery, Nick Casalini

Muriel Montgomery (0:00)

Hello, welcome to Muriel's Murders. I'm Muriel and I love true crime.

Nick Casalini (0:05)

I'm Nick and I am not a fan.

Muriel Montgomery (0:07)

Thank you for joining us. Each week, I force Nick to listen to me tell him a story of a true crime. This week, we bring you part one of our two-part series on Canadian serial killer Bruce McArthur.

Nick Casalini (0:29)

As some of you know, we had to take time off from Muriel's Murders because we attempted a quick vacation to Mexico, where we came down with a not-so-mild case of COVID, and were unable to get on a plane back to the States. Well, we're back, baby, and we couldn't be happier to be home, healthy and returning to our regularly scheduled Muriel's Murders program. A lot has happened to the two of us since we last put out an episode, and a whole lot has happened in the world. And wherever you are, whatever you're going through, Muriel and I want to send you our love.

Muriel Montgomery (0:59)

Speaking of love, oh baby, it's time for some major shout-outs.

Nick Casalini (1:04)

First off, hold on to your butts, because we need to shout-out everyone who signed up for our Patreon over the last handful of weeks.

Kenzie A. We love you guys, man. Thanks for doing that, man. Signing up for Patreon is the very best way to support Muriel and I making this podcast. And if you sign up on April 1st, you'll get a crazy-ass exclusive episode about the true crime going on in the paradise town of Yalapa, where Muriel and I just spent nine days. Plus, we're dropping early access to part two of this story on April 1st on Patreon. A quick technical note, Patreon charges you when you first sign up and then again on the first of the month. If you wanna sign up, probably just wait till the first of April. As soon as you sign up, you'll get all the exclusive episodes we've put out, which are really starting to add up. There's some bangers on there. The link for our Patreon is in the show notes of this episode.

We're gonna shout out our newest five-star reviews in the outro, and we also want to shout out those listeners who Venmo'd us some tequila and tacos money, but we're gonna save that for the next episode.

Nick Casalini (2:21)

Except we must thank Kelsey W, who sent us a very generous donation. This episode, parts one and two, are dedicated to you, Kelsey Dub. And that, our lovely friends, concludes the love portion of this episode.

Muriel Montgomery (2:34)

This is a true story involving murder, violence, drugs, adult themes, et cetera, so if any listeners would like Nick, and you don't want to hear about those kind of things, please consider listening to a different podcast.

Nick Casalini (2:45)

Plus, we'll probably end up doing a little cursing and joking, so if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, turn us off.

Muriel Montgomery (2:51)

All right, Nicky, are you ready to hear this story?

Nick Casalini (2:54)

No!

Muriel Montgomery (2:54)

Okay, let's get started.

Nick Casalini (3:10)

Okay, well the truth is, it really is good to be back. Muriel, I know you put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this episode. So without further ado, give the people what they want, baby.

Muriel Montgomery (3:20)

Okay, so we went to Puerto Vallarta and got COVID. That turned into a five week adventure that we're still processing. We tried to record episodes during our travels, but it all ended up crap. We didn't have the equipment, couldn't find the replacement equipment we needed, couldn't access the books I needed, had a meltdown, mostly me.

Nick Casalini (3:43)

We traded back our meltdowns. That was stressful. Well, also for a bunch of that, we were like, let's do podcasting, and we were just sick. We were just out of it, man.

Muriel Montgomery (3:51)

Wow, it was just, there's a million things. So anyway, then we gave up and accepted our fate, hanging out, getting fated and having adventures. So this episode was born out of that time.

I was looking for offbeat crimes from Puerto Vallarta that had substantial information in English, and I found this story of a Canadian serial killer named Bruce McArthur, who vacationed in Puerto Vallarta around the same time we were in Puerto Vallarta in pre-COVID times. And he hung out in Zona Romantica, where we've always stayed with Nick's parents.
