Microplastics, you can't burn those out of your body, right? Your body doesn't metabolize microplastics and use them for energy. So when you get a bunch of this stuff in your arteries, it makes it much more challenging to get it out, right? Now you've got more permanent plaque in your arteries. It's been a big problem, but now that they're finally doing more research studies on it, they're finding it's, oh, it's oops, it's a bigger problem than we thought.
Siim Land (0:20)
Welcome to the Siim Land Podcast. Our guest today is Dr. Anthony Jay. Anthony has a PhD in biochemistry, and he has worked as a scientific researcher at the Mayo Clinic. Anthony wrote the book Estrogeneration that talks about the dangers of microplastics and other hormone disruptors in our environment.
Siim Land (0:38)
Anthony, welcome back to the show.
Dr. Anthony Jay (0:40)
Yeah, thanks for having me, man.
Siim Land (0:42)
Yeah, like we did our first podcasts, like we talked previously about five years ago, which has been already like a long time since the last time we spoke. But the reason I wanted to bring it back on was because recently there's been a lot of, let's say, new studies about the dangers of microplastics and Xenorescence in our environment. And for the listener, then the most recent study was in a few months ago, and they found that this microplastics accumulated in the arteries were linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular events and cardiovascular death. So that obviously rings a lot of alarm bells for a lot of people.
And you're pretty much one of the world's leading experts on Xenorescence and microplastics, and you've written a book about it as well. So I'm happy to have you back on and talk about all things microplastics.
Dr. Anthony Jay (1:37)
Yeah, man, thanks. And it's interesting because it ties into intermittent fasting too. You're still talking a lot about intermittent fasting, I assumed, with people.
Siim Land (1:44)
Yeah, I'm doing it myself and I do it often.
Dr. Anthony Jay (1:49)
Yeah, same. I usually do a six-hour feeding window. In fact, I've been doing that every day for like 40 years, to be honest.
Siim Land (1:56)
Oh, for 40 years, wow.
Dr. Anthony Jay (1:58)
Yeah. And I was doing it before it was a thing, because I have so many gut issues and I just found, accidentally discovered, that just really helps my gut issues.
But the reason I bring that up is because fasting increases autophagy, which is basically cells taking out trash, as you know.
And you can think of these microplastics in our bodies as a type of trash, right? It's basically garbage. It's actually worse than that, because if your cell is burning sugar and you get metabolic trash, you get garbage from... It's kind of like if you're running a diesel truck and you get garbage, you get that black smoke coming out the back. It's dirty, and that happens when your cells are burning energy, but at least it's natural, right? It's like something your body is adapted for and you can clean out some of that garbage. The problem with microplastics, our ancestors were never exposed to these things. These are completely artificial, never found in nature, historically.
So our bodies aren't adapted for burning that type of trash, right? But autophagy still helps clear it out, right? I mean, it doesn't stay in your body forever. Your body still gets rid of that stuff. But it's just interesting timing because as you know, a couple of weeks ago, there was a quote unquote study. It's complete nonsense, but they said that intermittent fasting raises heart disease 91%, which was complete nonsense.
Wasn't even a study. It was just a phone call question there. But what was really interesting, Siim, was, and do you release the videos or these? Or are these just audio?
Siim Land (3:37)
I did make a video about the topic, but you can still cover it.
Dr. Anthony Jay (3:41)
Yeah, exactly. Well, when you release this, is it going to be a video or is it audio only?
Siim Land (3:50)
No, it's a video as well.
Dr. Anthony Jay (3:51)
Can you allow me to share the screen? I'll share my screen on a study, and I'll talk about it too in case people are just listening to the audio.
Siim Land (3:58)
Yeah, you can do it now.
Dr. Anthony Jay (3:59)
I should have asked you to do it before we talked, but I was kind of running late. So I'm sharing my screen and it says, this is an umbrella review. If you want to look it up, it's called an umbrella review of systematic reviews, meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of intermittent fasting. This was like two weeks before that study. That's a whole 91% increase in heart disease from intermittent fasting. This umbrella review that I have on the screen, you could see it, right, Siim? Yeah. Yeah, this was released, as you can see, in April of 2024
