The narrative unfolds over a single day, capturing Monty's interactions with his girlfriend, Naturale, played by Rosario Dawson, his father, James, played by Brian Cox, and his two best friends, Jacob Alinsky, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Frank Slaughtery, played by Barry Pepper. Each character is intricately woven into Monty's life, offering a glimpse into the complexities of their relationships and the impact of Monty's impending incarceration. Spike Lee masterfully uses the backdrop of post-September 11th New York City to add layers of depth to the story. The city itself becomes a character, with its vibrant yet sombre atmosphere reflecting Monty's internal turmoil. The film opens with a haunting image of the New York skyline, where spotlights stand in for the fallen twin towers, setting the tone for a narrative rich in subtext.

Edward Norton delivers a nuanced performance as Monty, capturing the character's internal conflict and the weight of his choices. Monty's journey is marked by moments of introspection, as he grapples with the realisation that his life will never be the same. His interactions with his friends and loved ones are tinged with a sense of finality, as they all come to terms with the fact that the Monty they know will soon be gone.
